Nike Junior Golf Camp Tip: Finish All of Your Putts
Our National Director of Nike Junior Golf Camps and Camp Director at Pebble Beach, Jeff Ritter has another tip for your golf improvement and game development.
Don't use "Gimme's"
This is all about forcing yourself to always make all your putts. Now we all know that the gimme is part of golfing culture. Any time we are playing with a group of friends and we cozy a putt up by the hole, two and a half feet away we hope that our friends will give it to us. When you walk back to your bag and mark the par down on your score sheet you feel like you are getting out of something. Consistently doing this will ruin your golf game, and will make putting not important.
Casual Golf
You should start by having to make the putt to mark the score. A lot of times it turns into “you give me this hole, and I will give you that 3rd hole” which is cheating yourself out of the game of golf. This is the real work you must do when becoming a good golfer. When playing in golf tournaments there are no gimme’s! If you are not forcing yourself during a casual round of golf to put every putt in the bottom of the hole, you will lack the mental toughness when it comes to crunch time in a tournament.
Make Every Putt
If you change your attitude, and now suddenly, these short putts really mean something to you, it will give you practice in those tough situations. Hammering that putt into the bottom of the hole will allow you to slowly develop you skills overtime and hone that winning instinct. Doing this will allow us to play best during tournaments and competitions. We all want to shoot low scores, but if those low scores aren’t rooted in truth then what kind of service are, we doing for ourselves as a player. So, the tip is make all of your putts, and if some one gives you a gimme, don’t accept it.
