Golf Tip: Don't Lie About Your Score

Pebble Gallery 3

National Director of Instruction for Nike Junior Golf Camps, Jeff Ritter, is back again with another game development tip. This tip today is relative to cheating yourself. This is rooted in the idea that a lot of golfers simply lie about their scores. Think about that for a second. They are lying about what they are shooting in a round of golf. They put it on the card, sign it and walk into the clubhouse telling people that something happened, when it simply did not.

Golf is made into this big thing, this big important thing. Golf is just a game, a G-A-M-E. It is designed to challenge us, designed to be played in a manner where we have a good time and to have fun. We should have fun when playing, practicing, and competing. In golf, we feel like the number we shoot, or that we post is saying maybe a little bit too much about who we are. If we are not posting a score that is in line with what we think about ourselves, then maybe people will think we are not talented. This amazing skill we think we possess can frustrate us when the game is not going our way. The most important thing to remember is your golf score is not who you are. How you respond to it is! This is an amazing lesson. This is an example of why this game is so amazing, we have so many opportunities to picture how well things should go. We should always take a second and focus on dealing with your emotions in case things do not go your way.

At the end of each round we add our scores up and have an opportunity to analysis your performance. When you add up your score, you must be ok with the result. Scoring lower on a round only shows that you have room for improvement, but if you act negatively because of that score the problem becomes worse. Accepting that some days will be better than others will free yourself of this stress. If you give 100% every time you play, you cannot be upset with the result. The score should not define you, and will help you make corrections so you can shoot a lower score next round. Remember that golf is a game, and don't cheat yourself by lying on your scorecard. Your golf score is not who you are, but how you respond to it is.
