Mooney is just the school’s fifth head men’s basketball coach in the program’s storied 33-year history.View James's Bio ⟩
Under Coach Mooney, the Dolphins have seen significant improvements and growth in all areas of the program. Statistically, the team has ranked within the top 5 of the Skyline Conference in 3pt FG% defense, turnover margin, and steals per game. For the 2019-2020 season, the team had the highest FG% and 3pt FG% in the last nine seasons, as well as one of the best assist/turnover ratios.
Adding to the team’s success, Mooney has also coached a 1st Team All-Skyline Conference Player in 2018 and most recently the sixteenth 1,000 point scorer in school history. The team has also been recognized for the NABC Academic Excellence Award in 2018 for having a cumulative GPA average of 3.0 or higher.
The Dolphins have faced three different Division I opponents under Coach Mooney (University of New Hampshire, Iona College, and Columbia University) in the last two seasons, which included a game on ESPN+. This past season, the Dolphins also traveled cross country to California for two games, which also marked the longest distance traveled in the program’s history.
Adding to the long list of firsts for the program, the JV team joined the American Independent Post-Grad & Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) in 2018, marking the first time that the JV team had membership to a conference. The JV team has seen six of its’ players move up to the varsity level.
In the summer of 2019, Mooney hosted the school’s first high school basketball prospect showcase, The Exclusive, which saw over 45 players come from eight different states along the East Coast, as well as ten college coaches that were in attendance. The Exclusive is an annual event that helps the program’s recruiting efforts, as well as fundraising.
Mooney’s Dolphins are also very active in the community and have participated in a wide variety of different community service projects. In 2018, the Dolphins spent a day with the Habitat for Humanity Project in Paterson, NJ and also attended a Westchester Knicks game, which helped raise money for ALS Awareness. In 2019, the Dolphins visited CS 154 in Harlem where they held a basketball clinic for the entire school. Mooney’s Dolphins have also participated in Yards For Yeardley and a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk that took place on campus.
Prior to CMSV, Mooney has had many different coaching and professional experiences that has ultimately led to the program’s turnaround. Most recently, Mooney was the head men’s varsity basketball coach at Rye Neck HS and the East Coast Regional Manager for Ultimate Hoops at Life Time Fitness. He has also worked at House of Sports as a player developer and was the assistant men’s varsity basketball coach at his alma mater, Iona Prep. There, he helped lead the team to two CHSAA City and State titles.
As a player, Mooney had an extremely successful and accomplished career. He won a CHSAA City Title with Iona Prep in 2002, is still top 20 in NCAA DIII history for most three-point field goals made per game in a career, and played professionally in Europe for three years. On top of being the all-time leading scorer for CMSV, Mooney also has the school’s highest scoring average in a season (26.2), most three-point field goals made in a season (101), most three-point field goals made in one game (9 – twice), most career steals (233) and scored more than 40 points in a game twice, just to name a few.
Mooney, a Bronx native, now resides in Yonkers, New York with his wife and CMSV alum, Danielle (’05), as well as with their daughter, Kara and son, Quinn.
