Bill Currier
The Fairfield Stags Head Coach and Nike Baseball Camp Director Bill Currier is coming off another fantastic season. Currier led the 2016 Stags, a team pre-ranked eighth in the MAAC Preseason Poll, to their first MAAC Tournament Championship in program history and an appearance in the program's first NCAA Regional. The two-time MAAC Coach of the Year (2012 and 2016) has also led Fairfield to a pair of 32-win seasons, setting new program records.
When Bill Currier first signed on to be the next head coach at Fairfield, he made it his goal that his team will not only compete for the MAAC title but to win it. Now, entering his sixth year as the Stags' head coach, Currier has seen that goal accomplished as he continues to bring the baseball program to the next level.
Last season will always be known as the best in Fairfield history, and arguably the best in the 29-year coaching career of Currier. The Stags tied a program record with 32 wins, en-route to their first overall MAAC title since 1993 and the first-ever tournament title. For his efforts, Currier was named the MAAC Coach of the Year, for the second time in his career. Currier also oversaw five All-MAAC selections and helped coach slugger Jake Salpietro who would end up breaking the program's single season hits record with 77 and was named the program's first Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week after winning the MAAC Tournament MVP.
Currier made his impact at Fairfield right from the start. During his first season at Fairfield, the Stags finished third in the conference, their highest finish in the MAAC in a decade. Fairfield also finished third in 2014, and won two games in the MAAC tournament, their most in a season since 1995. The Stags have seen their success under Currier through their pitching staff, setting single-season records in strikeouts (315) and shutouts (five) in 2012.
In total, Currier has been a head coach for 29 seasons and has accumulated 614 victories over that span. Before coming to Connecticut, Currier earned the most coaching victories in the history of his alma mater Vermont. In his 22 seasons with the Catamounts, Currier was a part of 486 wins, earned three America East Coach of the Year honors, and helped the squad to two conference Regular Season Championships.
In addition to his five total conference Coach of the Year awards, Currier was presented with the 2009 Ralph Lapointe Award for his services to Vermont athletics, and was the recipient of the 2002 Jack Butterfield Award by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association’s (NEIBA). He was also inducted to the Vermont Principals Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
Currier graduated from Vermont in 1984 and helped the Catamounts to the title game in the 1981 East Coast Athletic Conference New England Regionals. In that season, Currier hit .295 and led the squad with five home runs, four triples, and 65 total bases. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round and would play three seasons in their system.
Players who Currier has coached to make it into the MLB include Matt Duffy, a former Vermont infielder who was called up to the Houston Astros in 2015 and made his debut on September 16.
He earned a master’s in physical education from Western Carolina in 1986, while also serving as an assistant coach.
Currier resides in Shelton, Conn., with his wife Vicki. The couple has three sons: Brad, Bryan, and Bryce.
