In November, 2014, Coach Ewers became an assistant men's track coach with the University of Southern Maine for the indoor and outdoor seasons. Charlie continues to serve in this position along with assisting with the boys' and girls' cross country programs at Gorham High School in the fall. As a competitor in high school on Long Island, Charlie recorded bests of 50.6 for the 440 and 1:55.6 for the 880 and was the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA XC champion in 1962. Following a five year lay off after college, he raced the roads, hitting bests of 55 minutes for ten miles and 2:39 for the marathon.

From 1983 through 1986, he was assistant indoor and outdoor track coach at Ledyard High School in Connecticut, and in 1996, he took over as head cross country coach. From then until his retirement from teaching in 2006, his boys won six Class MM championships, including five consecutive titles from 2000 to 2004. Four of those teams went on to represent Connecticut at the New England Championship, where their best finish was 2nd in 2003. In 2002, Ledyard captured the State Open title and Charlie was named Connecticut Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year.

In 2008, Charlie resumed his coaching career at the Whitinsville Christian School in Whitinsville, Massachusetts. He coached the middle school boys cross country team in the fall, assisted with the coed indoor track team in the winter, and headed the boys outdoor track team through the spring of 2014.
