Head Coach - Spartanburg Methodist College Men's Soccer

Doug Smith brings a wealth of leadership, coaching experience, and soccer knowledge to his role as Head Men's Soccer Coach at Spartanburg Methodist College. With a strong background in player development, he has coached at both the collegiate and youth levels, focusing on technical growth, tactical understanding, and character building.
In his first season at SMC, he guided the Pioneers through their transition into NAIA competition, developing a competitive squad that saw standout performances on and off the field. Under his leadership, goalkeeper Francesco Molinar emerged as one of the top shot-stoppers in the Continental Athletic Conference, while Brandon Porras earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Smith also emphasizes academic excellence, with 22 players making the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and eight earning Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
Before taking over at SMC, Smith spent the 2023 season as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina Upstate, gaining valuable experience at the NCAA Division I level. Prior to that, he served as a volunteer coach at SMC, assisting with training sessions, game-day operations, and recruitment. In addition to his college coaching career, he has worked with youth players, helping them refine their skills and develop a love for the game.
Smith’s journey in soccer is complemented by his service in the Marine Corps, where he dedicated over a decade before returning to the game as a collegiate player at Palomar College in California. He previously played at Limestone University from 2006-2007 and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy.
With a strong background in both athletics and leadership, Smith is passionate about inspiring young players and creating a positive, high-energy training environment that helps them reach their full potential.
