Greg Goetz

Greg Goetz is in his third year on the Redhawks coaching staff in 2017-18, his first as an assistant coach after spending his first two seasons as the Director of Baseball Operations. His primary responsibilities include recruiting, working with outfielders and assisting with hitters. Goetz came to SU after building a top notch pitching staff at St Andrews University (NC).

In eleven years of coaching, Goetz has worked with eleven pitchers to reach the professional ranks. Keone Kela is the first of Goetz’s former players to reach the major leagues. Keone was a 12th round draft pick (2012) out of Everett CC and is currently pitching out of the Texas Rangers bullpen.

Most recently, Goetz was the head coach of the Bellingham Bells, a collegiate summer team competing in the West Coast League. The Bell’s summer 2017 record of 31-23 topped the North Division. Goetz managed the WCL Player of the Year, Chase Illig, and the Batting Champion, Austin Shenton. In total, 12 Bells were named to the All-WCL Team. Goetz also served as the Manager for the North Division in the WCL All-Star game.

Goetz spent three years at St. Andrews as the pitching coach and strength coach. While at SAU, Goetz helped manage the Knights to the most successful seasons in nearly 10 years. The pitching staff posted the lowest ERAs in nearly 15 years. The 2015 pitching staff ranked No. 1 in conference ERA posting a 3.48, had one All-Conference pitcher and had two Knoighs sign professional contracts. The 2014 staff ranked 34th nationally in ERA, threw seven shutouts, had one All-Conference pitcher, and one Knight pitcher moved on to the professional ranks. In Goetz’s first year at SAU, he made an immediate impact on the pitching staff, helping them reduce the ERA more than three points from the prior year to a 4.21 and had one pitcher move onto the professional ranks.

Prior to SAU, Goetz coached at Everett Community College where he spent three years as pitching coach and strength coach. He helped manage the Trojans to a .691 winning percentage over three seasons. In 2012, Goetz managed the No. 1 pitching staff in the NWAC with a 1.99 ERA, opponent’s batting average of .187, opponents slugging of .220, and threw nine shutouts. The pitching staff featured three starting pitchers earning all-conference honors and the NWAC MVP. The 2012 season marked the highest playoff finish to date in modern program history. The 2011 pitching staff featured all four starting pitchers and closer earning all-league honors. Everett had its highest playoff finish to date in modern program history.

In the summers, Goetz served as the pitching coach with the Everett Merchants, a collegiate summer team in the Pacific International League in 2012. He helped the Merchants become the top ranked pitching staff in the league with a 2.81 ERA. Prior to the Merchants, he was the head coach of the 19U Laces Baseball Academy team in 2010 and 2011, and assistant coach in 2009. Goetz also spent the summers of 2007 and 2008 as an Assistant Coach for the San Francisco Seals, a semi-pro summer team based in Santa Rosa, California.

Goetz won a state championship at Newport High School in 2001 before being drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 35th round in 2002. He decided not to sign and instead accepted a baseball scholarship to Washington State University for one year before transferring to Bellevue CC in 2003.

Goetz was an eighth round draft pick to the Cincinnati Reds in 2004. He went on to play professionally for the Single-A Billings Mustangs. After the 2004 season, he was the No. 3 ranked left-handed reliever in the Reds minor league organization according to Baseball America.

Goetz earned his masters degree in Coaching Education from Ohio University in 2013 after receiving his bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Central Washington University in 2008.
