James Harkey

James "JD" Harkey is the Director & Head Coach of Lacrosse at Spire Academy. A Virginia native, Harkey played midfield for the UMBC Retrievers from 2007 to 2011 under the tutelage of Hall of Fame coach Don Zimmerman.
Following an ACL repair, he received the Retrievers' 2010 Unsung Hero award. Harkey served as co-captain during the 2011 campaign with Jamie Kimbles, with whom he also shared the E. Richard Watts leadership award that season.
Following graduation from law school in 2014, JD became Coach Harkey for the USC Gamecocks, serving as Defensive Coordinator in 2015 and taking over as Head Coach prior to the 2016 season. Harkey led the 'Cocks from unranked to a final-four finish in 2018 and MCLA national champions in 2019.
JD lives in Columbia, South Carolina, with his wife Emily, herself an accomplished former attacker for the UMBC Women's Lacrosse team.
