Jimmy Sorrells

Coach Sorrells has been the only cross country coach at Flowery Branch High School in Flowery Branch, Georgia since the school opened in 2002. In 2008, Coach Sorrells took over the track program.

Since Flowery Branch opened, the boys program has only placed outside the top ten once at the State meet, in its inaugural year they placed 11th. The boys program has reached the podium six straight years including State Titles in 2008, 2009, and 2011. In his inaugural year as a track coach, the boys were runners-up at track. Coach Sorrells has had numerous athletes place in the top ten at state in cross country and several medalists in track at state. He has coached state track champions in discus, shot put, high jump, pole vault, 400 meters, and 800 meters. Erika Rucker is currently running collegiately at South Carolina. Erika was a double state champion her senior year in the 400 and 800. After her freshman year of South Carolina Erika place third in the world in the 400 meters for USATF juniors. She also medaled gold in the World’s for the 4 X 400 meter relay. Also at South Carolina is pole vaulter Austin Eckenroth, who under Sorrells was ATC’s Field Event Athlete of the year.

As an athlete, Sorrells ran at University of West Georgia. He capped off his career at West Georgia as the Gulf South Conference’s individual champion in cross country, the school’s first All-American in cross country, and school record holder for 10k cross country at 29:43. In 2001, Sorrells was inducted to the West Georgia’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
