John Carney enters his first season with the Bears in 2022-23. He joins the Bears after a decorated career as an assistant coach at some of the nation's top programs.

Carney will be the assistant coach at Cal after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Missouri for the past nine seasons. As an assistant coach for the SEC powerhouse, he helped Mizzou to a fifth-place finish in the final rankings this past year as the Tigers qualified for the NCAA Championship and finished third in the semifinal just missing out on a chance to be one of the final four on the floor.

Missouri finished 11th during the 2022 regular season as they recorded one of the best seasons in program history. Carney helped the Tigers set records for the highest team score at the SEC Championship and NCAA Championship. The team recorded their best-ever SEC Championship finish at fourth and their top regular season team score at 197.675. Carney's bar lineup recorded their best-ever NCAA score with a 49.425 in the NCAA Semifinal. He also helped Missouri to the program's first-ever wins over both Alabama and Georgia this past year.

During his time at Missouri he coached four All-SEC performers, three All-Freshman Team and the 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year Morgan Porter. He helped Helen Hu to SEC Event Specialist of the Year and WCGA Regular Season All-American honors on bars in 2020. Additionally, Sienna Schreiber was named an All-American in both the regular season and postseason for her all-around performances in 2022.

When Carney arrived in Missouri, the Tigers were coming off a season where they finished 43rd in the final rankings. Throughout his time in Columbia, he has helped guide the Tigers to seven straight top-20 finishes, including a No. 5 ranking last year.

Carney is familiar with the west coast as he is a native of Tucson, Arizona and a graduate of Oregon State. He also worked with the Beavers gymnastics team for five seasons, where he coached a pair of NCAA Regional bars champions and two Pac-10/12 Conference bars champions. In every season with the Beavers, his bar squads finished amongst the nation's top 10, including having the No. 1 ranked uneven bars team in 2011. That season he had led three Beavers to a tie for the Pac-12 title on bars. He also led Jen Kesler, Makayla Stambaugh and Olivia Vivian to top six finishes at the NCAA Championship on bars.

Carney was named the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013. During that season, Carney coached the team to a program record on bars of 49.675. He also coached Stambaugh to a Pac-12 title on bars as the Beavers had four top-five bars finishers at the Pac-12 Championship on their way to a team title.

In addition, Carney coached five gymnasts to All-American honors on the uneven bars, and his uneven bars competitors earned a combined 10 all-conference nods during his time at Oregon State. They also earned seven all-conference nods and three All-American awards as all-around competitors.

Carney's skills have reached the national level as he has worked with USA Gymnastics for several seasons as a Junior Olympic National Team Training Camp staff member.

Carney is also familiar with club-level training as he spent seven years as the Co-Head Gymnastics Coach at Gymnastics East in Bellevue, Wash. There, Carney guided his gymnasts to eight Junior Olympic National team titles, five Junior Olympic National Champion individual titles and multiple State and Regional Championship titles. He is a five-time USA Gymnastics Washington Coach of the Year award winner, and a three-time USA Gymnastics Regional 2 Coach of the Year award winner.

Carney received his Master's of Education in educational and counseling psychology from Missouri in 2016 and Bachelor's of Arts in new media communications from Oregon State in 2011. Carney will be moving to the Bay Area with his wife, Jackie, and son, JP.
