John Spinney

John Spinney is in his eighth season of his second stint as the head volleyball coach at Thomas More College during the 2015-16 academic year.

Last season (2014), he led the Saints to a 30-5 record, including a 16-2 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Saints won the PAC regular season and tournament titles, while advancing to the program's school-best-tying 13th NCAA Division III Championship.

In 2013, he led the Saints to a 24-6 record, including a 15-3 record in the PAC. The Saints won the program's fifth PAC tournament title and advance to the program's 12 NCAA Division III Tournament.

In 2012, Spinney guided the Saints to a 26-6 record, including a 17-1 record in the PAC. The Saints won PAC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In 2011, he guided the Saints to a 19-11 record including a 13-5 record in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and a spot in the PAC Championship Tournament semifinals for the seventh straight season.

In 2010, Spinney led the Saints to a 28-8 record, including a perfect 18-0 in PAC matches. The Saints won PAC regular season and tournament titles for the third time in program history and advanced to the program's 10th NCAA Division III Tournament.

In 2009, he guided the Saints to the PAC regular season and tournament titles and the NCAA Division III Tournament. Thomas More finished the season with a 28-11 record, including a 13-1 record in the PAC.

In 2008, Spinney guided the Saints to a 28-7 record, including an 11-3 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Saints finished runner-up in the PAC tournament.

In his first season at Thomas More in 2001, Spinney guided the Saints to an 18-19 record, an improvement of two games over the team's record in 2000. Of the Saints' 19 losses, 13 came to teams ranked 15th or higher in the Division III Top-25. In addition, Spinney accepted the head coaching job in March of 2001, having not been able to recruit nor properly prepare for the upcoming season. However, his 18 wins were the fourth-highest by a Thomas More head coach in their first season, tying him with James Neyhouse and Clayton Barnes who each posted 18 wins in the 1998 and 2000 seasons, respectively.

In 2002, Spinney led the team to its first 20-win season since 1999 as the team went 20-15, barely missing the team's school-leading eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. Thomas More played 10 matches against teams ranked in the NCAA Division III Top-25 and 11 matches against eight teams that advanced to the 2002 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship.

Before his arrival at Thomas More prior to the 2001 season, Spinney was associated with winning, mostly as an assistant coach. All totaled, he has spent 10 seasons as a college coach, seven as an assistant and three as a head coach. Spinney began his collegiate coaching career back in 1993 as an assistant coach at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio under Mary Ann Broderick. The following season, in 1994, Spinney served as interim head coach, guiding the Lions to a school record 37 wins as the team posted a a record of 37-9 before losing in the NAIA regional championship.

Following the 1994 season, Spinney resumed his duties as assistant coach at Mount St. Joseph where he stayed until 1997 when he left to become an assistant coach at Division I Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT in 1998. During that season, the Stags went 35-2, advancing to the NCAA Tournament and earning them conference coaching staff of the year honors in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Fairfield also won its third-straight MAAC regular season title as well as their second-straight MAAC Tournament championship to advance to the national tournament.

After longtime friend and Fairfield head coach Todd Kress resigned following the 1998 season, Spinney returned home to Cincinnati, OH where he rejoined the Mount St. Joseph staff before the 1999 season. In 1999, the Lions finished 34-5 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals. The next season in 2000, Mount St. Joseph also advanced to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals with a 32-5 record. As a member of the Lions' coaching staff those two seasons, Spinney helped coach Betsy Owens who was a three-time AVCA All-American, including a two-time First-Team selection.

In his six seasons as an assistant coach at Mount St. Joseph, Spinney helped the team to an overall record of 204-76 (.729). Combined with his record as an assistant at Fairfield, he has a record of 239-78 (.754) in seven seasons as an assistant coach. His career head coaching record currently stands at 75-43 (.636) which means in his 10 seasons as a collegiate coach, Spinney has been associated with over 300 wins with a record of 314-121 (.722).

Spinney, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, has coached various Cincinnati clubs to the national tournament, including Sports Express, Team Z and Cincy Classic. He now is the coaching director for Cincy Classic Volleyball Club and over the past two years the club has sent 10 teams to Junior Olympic Nationals.

As a player, Spinney was captain and president of the University of Cincinnati men's club volleyball team in 1992 and 1993. Today, he continues to compete in local indoor and outdoor tournaments and serve as an official in recreational leagues while conducting clinics for area volleyball enthusiasts.
