Chestnut Hill Josh Cohen Headshot

Josh is the Head Coach of Billie Jean King’s Philadelphia Freedoms, co-founder of the Chirico Cohen Tennis Academy and Head Pro at Green Valley Country Club.

Josh is a Pennsylvania native and one of the best players to emerge from the United States in recent years. Following in his parent’s competitive tennis footsteps, Josh picked up tennis at four and never looked back. His father, Richard, played on the University of Pennsylvania Men’s Tennis Team and to this day holds a top men’s ranking in Middle States (Josh and Richard have won the National Father and Son Tennis Championships together recently).

It was only a few short years ago that Josh was being spotlighted by Sports Illustrated as an up and coming star. He was ranked top 10 in the world in the juniors and #1 nationally in every USTA age group 12’s – 18’s. He reached the finals of Kalamazoo (Boys 18’s Super National Championship) and has won the International Grass Court Championship. Covering every major continent, Josh competed in all four Grand Slams (US Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open). He went on to reach the Quarter Finals of the French Open Junior Championships and the Round of 16 of the US Open. You can catch Josh’s younger sister, Julia, during the upcoming coverage of the US Open, as she is currently a top 100 touring professional WTA player. In their joint careers, the Cohen’s dominated USTA tennis for years, collectively amassing over 40 national championships in singles and doubles.

Josh also has a lot of team tennis experience. He attended Episcopal Academy growing up and at 13, was the youngest player in school history to play #1 Singles on the Varsity Tennis Team. He also spent time as their Director of competitive training. He went undefeated throughout high school and became the top player in Inter-Academic League play. Josh later went on to compete on full scholarship at the tennis power house - University of Miami, where he achieved All-ACC, All-Big East and All-American honors. By the end of his collegiate tennis career he had made Dean’s List and held the best winning percentage in the program’s history with 170 career wins.

After his illustrious career at University of Miami, Josh went on to compete professionally, playing for two World Team Tennis teams – Delaware Smash and the Philadelphia Freedoms. There, he had a chance to team up with some of the games’ greatest: Venus Williams, Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi. After 2 years of playing on tour, Josh decided to try his hand at coaching and accepted an assistant coaching position scouting for, motivating and coaching professional players on the Philadelphia Freedoms Team. For the past four years, Josh has been the Assistant Coach of the University of Pennsylvania Men’s Tennis Team. During his time there the team earned a national ranking and numerous players went on to achieve All-Ivy honors.

Josh brings to Green Valley Country Club, a world of tennis expertise, years of coaching under his belt and numerous valuable relationships with college coaches all around the country that surely benefit today’s juniors. Josh has worked with all levels of players, from beginners to touring pro’s and looks forward to bringing his enthusiasm and knowledge to players of all ages. Currently, Josh is the Head Coach of Billie Jean King’s Philadelphia Freedoms, co – founder of the Chirico Cohen Tennis Academy and Head Pro at Green Valley Country Club.
