Kathy Sell Smith

Kathy is a certified power/vinyasa yoga instructor having completed a 200-hour teacher training in 2010 and currently working toward her 500-hour advanced training. She works privately with athletes and teams at Duke University and The University of North Carolina and is the founder of Yoga Off East, a neighborhood power yoga and meditation studio in Durham.

Kathy is a graduate of Duke University, where she was a four year starter on the women's tennis team and reached a career goal of being ranked Top 10 in the nation her senior year. It was when she was sidelined from tennis due to injury that Kathy discovered yoga. She soon craved a more regular practice, one that she would continue long after her competitive tennis career. Kathy views yoga as an evolving practice, one that reflects life transitions and our growth as human beings. She loves to see her students breathe, laugh, and sweat during class.

Kathy's life long love for the sport of tennis has taken her all over the country. While in graduate school at the University of Oregon, Kathy started her coaching career as an assistant tennis coach. After two years, Kathy returned to the east coast where she spent five years as the Head Women's Tennis Coach at Princeton University. The program won its first Ivy League Title in 9 years and garnered the #1 recruiting class in the nation during Kathy’s tenure. In 2009, Kathy followed her heart back to Durham where her husband had landed his dream job as the Head Men's Tennis Coach at their alma mater, Duke. Kathy and Ramsey reside in Durham with their daughter, Sofie, and son, Sandon, and a chocolate Labrador, Sage.
