Lashaunda Spurgeon is the head coach at Christian Brothers University

Lashaunda Spurgeon was named the new CBU volleyball coach on March 24, 2025, after two highly successful seasons as the head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at Talladega College. She guided the women’s program to back-to-back NAIA National Tournament appearances during the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, with both tournament runs ending against Indiana Wesleyan, who won the NAIA National Championship both years.

In her first season at Talladega, Spurgeon immediately made her mark by leading the Tornadoes to their first-ever volleyball championship, winning the GCAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships. That season, she was named the 2023 GCAC Coach of the Year and the 2023 AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year after guiding the team to a 31-9 overall record, highlighted by a 15-1 mark in conference play. Her team’s 31 wins marked a school record for victories in a season. Additionally, her program had its first-ever top 10 regional ranking for two consecutive seasons and, for the first time in history, received votes in the national poll during the 2024 season.

Spurgeon has nine impactful years of coaching and recruiting experience at the NCAA Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA levels. She was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Coach of the Year in Spring 2021 including an impressive 59-20 during her time at Dillard University. Under her leadership, the team earned numerous accolades.

Over the course of her career, Spurgeon has amassed 51 awards and honors across various programs, including individual, team, and academic recognition.

In addition to athletic success, Spurgeon has been dedicated to academic excellence. Her teams have demonstrated commitment in the classroom, with a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 or higher. Her programs also boast accolades such as being named to the 2021 NAIA Scholar-Athlete Team, earning Five Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete Awards (2020-2021) , and three Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars.

Spurgeon reached career coaching win No. 100 in 2023, and her overall record now stands at 137-74.

A native of Albertville, Alabama, Spurgeon was an accomplished all-around athlete at Albertville High School, excelling in volleyball, basketball, and track & field. while also winning the SIAC Women’s Javelin Championship in 2011 and 2012. She was inducted into the Stillman College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.

Spurgeon began her coaching career at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and as a club volleyball coach for Club Crimson. Later she became assistant at Vernon College, and she was promoted to head coach at Vernon in 2017, achieving a 31-32 record over two seasons and helping achieve an overall 107-72 record during her five years there. She later served as an assistant coach at Fayetteville State University, where the Broncos claimed the 2019 CIAA Tournament Championship and received an NCAA Division II Tournament berth.

Spurgeon holds a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Stillman College and a master’s degree in Sports Administration with a concentration in Educational Leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
