Manuel (Manny) Martinez is the Cal Assistant Field Hockey Coach.
Manuel (Manny) Martinez joined Cal Field Hockey as an assistant coach in Fall 2021. Martinez was part of the coaching staff that led the team to its first America East Conference Championship in 2023 and an NCAA Tournament berth. He also coached the team to a America East Conference semi-final berth in his first season in Fall 2021.
Prior to joining Cal, Martinez boasts international and national coaching experience. Martinez coached at Hockey South Australia from 2015-20, helping the U-21 South Australian men's team to the 2019 national championship. Other coaching endeavors in Australia include serving as head coach for the University of Adelaide Hockey Club Women's U-18 team (2015-16), Men’s Metro League 1 team (2017-2018), and Women’s Metro League 2 and Women's Metro League 3 teams (2018-20).
A native of San Diego, Martinez served as a technical skills coach for the East County Gators, Poway Mystix, Coastal Clash Field Hockey Club, and as a Futures Program Coach for the United States Field Hockey Association in San Diego from 2005 until 2021. He was also varsity assistant coach and junior varsity head coach at La Jolla High School from 2008-09. Martinez continues to coach for the USA Field Hockey Nexus program.
Martinez is a former USA Field Hockey Men's National Team member. He played for the U.S. U-18 squad from 2005-07, U-21 Junior U.S. Men's National Team from 2007-10 and Senior U.S. Men's National Team from 2011-18, reaching 30 international caps. Highlights of Martinez's 13 year playing career with USA Field Hockey include being part of two first-place squads at the 2012 and 2016 World League, representing the U.S. at the 2009 Junior World Cup in Singapore/Malaysia, and winning bronze at the 2008 Junior Pan American Games.
