In his first season as Head Coach of the Newbury Nighthawks, his team reached the quarterfinals of the NECC Playoffs, bounced out of the tournament by Becker. Despite the 8-10 record in his first season, two members of the 2016-17 team finished on the All-NECC First Team; Destiny Spears ('18) and Savannah Olsen ('19). The eight NECC wins were the most for the program since 2012-13.

Under Taney's watch in 2016-17, Spears led the league in scoring average with 18.5 PPG and was fourth in rebounds per game with 11.6. Olsen was fifth in scoring average with 17.2 PPG and fifth in rebounding average with 10.9. Both players were among a group of five NECC student-athletes to average a double-double in 2016-17.

Spears also tied a record for most points in a game in Nighthawks history (35) and became the third player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Meanwhile, Olsen has scored more points in her first two seasons than any other player in Nighthawks history (800).

Taney will also serve as the Director of Basketball Operations beginning in April 2017.

Taney came to Newbury from Springfield College, where he served as Women’s Basketball Graduate Assistant. Prior to Springfield, he served as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Keene State College from 2012-2014.

Coupled with his collegiate coaching experience, Taney has nine years of high school and national level AAU coaching experience. Taney’s specializations include team development, recruiting, and mentoring student-athletes through education and career path decisions.

“I am incredibly honored to be Newbury College's Head Women’s Basketball coach,” said Taney. “I would like to thank President Joseph Chillo and Jonathan Harper for providing me an opportunity to fulfill my dream of becoming a Head Coach. I look forward to working with the current student-athletes, as well as future student-athletes, toward cultivating a culture of success on and off the court here at Newbury College.”

Taney graduated from Western Connecticut State University summa cum laude with a BA in Psychology, and from Springfield College with an MS in Sport Management.
