Mark Haines

Mark Haines Headshot

Mark Haines was named head men's golf coach at Chicago State University on August 1, 2019.

Prior to taking over the Chicago State University men's golf program, Haines spent four years at Governors State University in nearby University Park, Illinois, as the head men's and women's golf coach.

In four seasons at Governors State, Haines grew the new program into a solid Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference contender. The men’s team placed fourth in the season-ending 2018-19 CCAC Championships and produced GSU’s first all conference performer in the school's short golf history.

The Jaguars men's team won three tournaments over two seasons, including the University of St. Francis Invite in 2018-19. The squad also recorded nine top four finishes during his final two years at the school.

The GSU teams were also strong academically. His teams produced 45 GSU athletic honors, eight NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athletes and the women's team had the highest team GPA three times and graduated the most student athletes of all athletic teams at Governors State University during his four years at the school.

Haines is very familiar with the Cougar Program. His son, Keith, played one season as a graduate student in 2013-14 and was a graduate assistant for coach Marty Schiene for the Program in 2014-15. He graduated from CSU with a Masters Degree in History.

Haines is part of a three generation family of college golfers and athletes. His father, Arthur, lettered in golf and basketball at the University of Richmond (1947-1949) after returning from the Army as a WW II Veteran. His daughter, Lindsey, was an NCAA Division III All-American golfer, two-time conference champion and three-time National Tournament participant at Illinois Wesleyan University. His son, Keith, played three seasons at NCAA Division II Eckerd College and one season at Chicago State University.

Haines was a four-year letter winner and four-sport athlete at Illinois Institute of Technology from 1976-1981. He was an all conference golfer and team captain. Haines was recruited to play basketball, but also excelled at golf, cross country and bowling. He was also the head men's golf coach for two seasons and assistant basketball and sports information for several years until moving into the business world after receiving his MBA from IIT.

Haines was born and raised in Riverdale, Illinois. He attended Marist High School and received a Bachelors in Finance (1980) and MBA (1982) from The Stuart School of Business at Illinois Institute of Technology. Haines resides in Crete, Illinois, with his wife Kimberly. He also has oversees operations at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course since 2006.
