Micah Boyd

Micah Boyd enters his second year as assistant coach for the Blue Devils.

In his first year as assistant coach for Duke in 2019, Boyd coached the third and fourth varsity eight boats. Boyd guided the 3V8 boat to a first-place finish in the Carolina Cup, achieving a time of 7:12.4. At the Cooper Sprints in Camden, N.J., the 4V8 earned first in a field of 14 schools, clocking a time of 6:58.36. The 3V8 crew finished right behind for second place (6:58.60).

At the Lake Wheeler Invitational, the 3V8 boat notched a first-place showing, while the fourth varsity eight placed second. At the 2019 ACC Championship, the 3V8 crew earned a silver medal in the Grand Final (6:35.437), helping Duke secure second-place with a program-record 90 total points.

Boyd previously served as the boathouse manager for the Duke rowing program. In his lone year as boathouse manager, Boyd helped maintain all equipment, while driving trailers to regattas and training sites and providing logistical support as needed. The 2017-18 season saw the Duke rowing squad capture a third-place finish at the ACC Championships as the team qualified all five boats to the Grand Final for the first time in program history.

Boyd came to Durham after six years at the University of North Carolina as the head coach of the men’s club rowing team. After starting as the novice coach for the Tar Heels in the 2012-13 season, Boyd was promoted to head coach for the remainder of his time with UNC, assuming responsibilities for budget, travel, day-to-day logistics and team training while also coordinating with the women’s team in regards to resources.

Prior to his stint in Chapel Hill, Boyd was the assistant/head coach for the Emory University Women’s Club Rowing Team from 2009-12, where his responsibilities included coaching, workout design, athlete recruitment, regatta logistics and travel for 20-35 student-athletes. Boyd would also supervise the novice coach, maintain equipment, boats and boathouse and create alumni connections for funding opportunities.

Boyd has garnered numerous awards throughout his rowing career. He received the Norm Sonju Award in 2004 as the most valuable player, was named team captain of Wisconsin men’s rowing team in 2003, and was presented with the Randall T. Jablonic Award as the freshman most valuable player following his rookie campaign with the Badgers.

Boyd has also been successful on the international stage, capturing bronze with the men’s 8+ at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and earning the US Rowing Male Athlete of the Year. Boyd also notched bronze at the 2005 World Championships with the men’s coxed pair.

At the coaching level, Boyd is a three-time American Collegiate Rowing Association (ARCA) South Regional Coach of the Year and the 2015 ARCA National Coach of the Year.

A three-time member of the Dean’s List, Boyd graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in wildlife ecology in 2004. He currently resides in Durham with his family.
