Te'o was defensive captain of the Long Beach Poly football team for two years before switching to rugby. He won the 2012 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy with the AIG Men's Junior All-Americans

Te'o was defensive captain of the Long Beach Poly football team for two years before switching to rugby. He won the 2012 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy with the AIG Men's Junior All-Americans and made his debut for the Men's Eagles Sevens later at Gold Coast Sevens during the 2012-13 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series.
