Shay Knighten

Assistant Coach

Shay Knighten - Assistant Coach

Shay Knighten joined San Diego softball as an assistant coach in October 2020 and is entering her sixth season with the Toreros.

The two-time national champion and former All-American will work with San Diego's hitters and infielders, while being tasked with recruiting, scheduling and assisting with fundraising.

Knighten adds a wealth of elite softball experience to the staff after helping lead the Oklahoma Sooners to back-to-back national titles in 2016 and 2017. A standout hitter throughout her collegiate career, she posted a .360 batting average with 247 hits and 42 home runs over four seasons. During the Sooners’ memorable 2017 Women’s College World Series championship run, Knighten delivered a 12-game hitting streak that spanned the entire postseason and produced multiple clutch performances at the plate.

She started 233 of 239 career games, finished her career ranked fourth in sacrifice flies (10) and sixth in RBIs (197) in program history, and earned numerous accolades including 2016 and 2017 NFCA Second Team All-American, 2017 WCWS Most Outstanding Player, 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year, and four-time All-Big 12 honors.

In 2019, Knighten was selected 20th overall by the USSSA Pride, who went on to win the NPF Championship that summer. In addition to her playing duties, she helped run camps and coached more than 200 youth athletes. Prior to joining the Toreros, she served as an undergraduate assistant coach at Oklahoma in 2019-20.

Knighten earned her degree in human relations from Oklahoma in May 2020. A native of Buena Park, Calif., she is excited to bring her championship pedigree and passion for player development to San Diego’s Nike Softball Camps.
