Associate Head Coach - Women's Tennis

Zack Warren

Zack Warren

Zack Warren enters his fifth year at California as an assistant coach for the women's team after serving three years as the men's assistant tennis coach at Brigham Young University, one as a volunteer assistant for Cal's men's team (2012) and more recently as a men's assistant coach at UNLV.

In the 2015-16 season, Warren assisted head coach Amanda Augustus in producing one of the best years in program history. Cal reached the NCAA team semifinals and put together an impressive list of firsts, including winning its first national indoor title and first national team title overall when it won the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, having a Golden Bear (freshman Olivia Hauger) collect the national indoor Most Outstanding Player award, and earning the No. 1 ranking in the team poll for the first time.

Pac-12 singles champion and Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year Maegan Manasse earned singles and doubles All-America honors, with Denise Starr also becoming a doubles All-American for the second time and senior Klara Fabikova closing out her career with her first singles All-America accolade. Starr (second team), Fabikova (second team), Lynn Chi (second team) and Hauger – the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year who earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention – joined Manasse with Conference honors. Starr and Manasse also claimed the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year award.

Augustus earned the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year award, while three players earned ITA Northwest Regional accolades in Fabikova (Senior Player of the Year), Starr (Player to Watch) and Hauger (Rookie of the Year).

The ITA took notice of Warren’s fine work
in the 2014-15 season – when Cal produced six All-America honors and six All-Pac-12 players – as it named him the 2015 ITA Northwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. Cal earned other regional honors including Augustus’ Coach of the Year award, Zsofi Susanyi’s Senior Player of the Year honor, Fabikova’s Player to Watch laurel and Karla Popovic’s Rookie of the Year nod.

While at BYU, Warren helped guide the men's program to three historic seasons, which included an overall record of 58-22 and a Mountain Region record of 27-0.

The 2010 and 2011 Cougar squads both finished with a BYU record-tying 21 wins, going 21-7 and 21-6, helping propel the team to two consecutive NCAA Championships.

In 2010, Warren helped the Cougars earn their first Conference title since 2003. The Cougars went on to win both the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship and tournament title in 2011.

BYU found itself in the top 25 in 2010 for the first time in over 30 years. And in the 2011-2012 season he coached Georgy Batrakov to the final 16 of the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Warren's perfect record against regional opponents (27-0) over three seasons helped him earn the 2011 Mountain Region Assistant Tennis Coach of the Year, making him a candidate for the National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Before his hiring as an assistant coach, Warren played collegiate tennis for BYU during the 04-05 and 05-06 seasons.

Prior to his playing and coaching experience at BYU, Warren was an instructor for BYU tennis camps as well as the summer camp director for Rolling Hills Club in Novato, Calif.

Warren graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in communications and a business minor. His wife, Angela, is a former All-American track athlete for BYU. The two of them reside in Marin County.
