Getting to Know: Alicia Komaki, Sierra Canyon School

Nike Basketball Camps Logo Square

In 3 years as Head Coach, Alicia Komaki has led the Trailblazers to three consecutive California State Championships. Based on her team’s success, Sierra Canyon School became the area's first girls basketball program to three-peat in state titles. Coach Komaki enters her 2nd summer with Nike Basketball Camps, instructing two co-ed basketball training camps in Los Angeles County, California.

What made you get into coaching?

I knew at a young age that I wanted to coach basketball. I had a great mentor growing up that made me fall in love with the sport. I always knew I understood the game well.

What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?

We had a great camp last year! For me the most important role I can play is to be a great teacher and ensure that kids are learning and getting better over the course of the week. If that happens, we did our job!

Favorite drill or activity at camp?

We have “contests of the day” at our camp. Our most fun contest is “King of the Court.” It is a group contest and it is always super competitive and full of incredible energy!

What is your “go-to” Nike gear?

I’m a Nike billboard! I’m all Nike, all the time.

Which college or pro Coach do you admire and why?

I admire a lot of coaches successful or otherwise because we all put in time and energy to make other people better. That is something to be applauded. I respect all coaches who are invested in their programs.

What’s in your bag?

In my basketball bag would be my lucky dry erase board (won 5 state titles with it), a dry erase marker, diagram notepad, and my lucky pen.
