Getting to Know: Deena Applebury, Head Coach University of Mary Washington

Deena Applebury

As a coach for almost 20 years, Deena Applebury is excited to begin her fourth year as the Camp Director for the Eagles Nike Girls Basketball Camp University of Mary Washington.

The architect of the greatest seasons in UMW women’s basketball history in just 12 years at the helm, Deena Applebury has in a very short time brought UMW women’s basketball to the forefront in NCAA Division III basketball circles and earned one of the highest career winning percentage in NCAA Division III history.

The 2011-12 season proved historic as Applebury led the Eagles to 30 straight wins en route to its second-ever Elite Eight appearance and a 30-1 record. The Eagles won the CAC regular season and Tournament championships, and Applebury was named Coach of the Year by the CAC, VaSID and The Richmond Times-Dispatch for the state of Virginia, and as region coach of the year by D3Hoops.com and the WBCA. The Eagles returned to the CAC Championship in 2014-15 for Applebury's 10th 20-win campaign.

What made you get into coaching?

I wanted to give back to the sport that has given me so much in my life. I love the positive impact a coach can have on a student athlete. Some of the biggest influences in my life were coaches.

What is your favorite camp drill and why?

I love any type of defensive drill. Every player will have days when they cannot make a shot, but if they play tough defense they can always find a spot on the floor. If your team plays a good team, they give themselves a chance to win every game!

What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?

The key to me is having fun and watching the campers learn new skills. I love when a camper has the “eye opening” moment when they achieve something they didn’t think they could do. The look in a camper’s eyes when they begin to believe in themselves is priceless.

Which college or pro coach do you admire and why?

There are many great coaches that I admire, but a couple that I admire the most are Muffet McGraw and Pat Summit. These coaches are terrific leaders, who have created a culture of building strong character in young women and incredibly successful basketball programs.

What is your “go-to” Nike gear?

It is without a doubt ----Nike shoes! I love the different styles and colors that Nike offers. There is nothing like getting a new pair of shoes.

What’s in your basketball bag?

In my basketball bag, there is always a whistle and clip board. There will also be a book about coaching or leadership. We as coaches NEVER stop learning, so I try to read as much as I can and watch as much basketball as possible to better prepare my teams.
