    My son really enjoyed working with Cal's coaches and rowers (a highlight) and the fact that they changed up the camp based on the needs and interests of the camp attendees. Coaches, Cal Rowers, level of intensity increased for the needs of the rowers that attended. Boat house was great. Camp leaders were fun, interesting and took the campers around to great places.

Berkeley leads the nation as the premiere location for elite collegiate rowing and is also home of the US Men's Senior National Team. Join the Cal Coaching staff and perennial powerhouse men's rowing team for a great summer at UC Berkeley.

Cal Men's Rowing continues to create a history of success as the top ranked program in the country. Our camp staff can't wait to instill its winning philosophy onto its campers this summer!

All Cal Sports Camps are open to any and all entrants. For your safety and benefit, we recommend you choose a camp that fits your level of development. All events are subject to change based on NCAA and Covid-19 restrictions. Due to high demand and limited capacity, prices are subject to increase as camp exceeds 25%/50%/75% capacity.

    Brandon Shald '09 enters his first season as an an assistant coach with the Cal men’s rowing team, joining Scott Frandsen’s staff in June of 2018.

    A 2007 IRA Champion and 2009 Cal graduate, Shald joins the Golden Bear staff as an assistant coach after spending the last three seasons at Penn, coaching alongside former Golden Bear coach Geoff Bond. As the Quakers’ top assistant, Shald worked with all the program’s boats and student-athletes, while also serving as Penn’s head of recruiting. Prior to his arrival in Philadelphia, Shald spent two seasons at Princeton, helping both the heavyweight and lightweight crews to top-five finishes at both the IRA and Eastern Sprints. In addition to his duties with Tigers' varsity programs, Shald also served as head coach of the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association from the spring of 2014 through the fall of 2015.

    A three-year member of the Cal men’s rowing team, Shald helped the Bears’ novice eight to an undefeated season in 2007, winning both the Pac-10 and IRA Championships while also capturing the prestigious Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. Shald then became a fixture in the Bears’ varsity eight, helping Cal to a Pac-10 title in the eight in 2009 and podium finishes at the IRA in both 2008 and 2009. During his time in Berkeley, Shald was also recognized for his leadership and teamwork, winning the program’s Dean Witter Award as a senior.

    After graduating in 2009 with a degree in Classical Civilization, Shald spent time training with the U.S. National Team, winning a silver medal in the eight at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Sydney. Shald also took part in selection for the eight for the 2012 Olympics and stroked the California Rowing Club eight to victory at the Royal Henley Grand Challenge Cup in 2012.

    A Nebraska native, Shald began his coaching career in 2009, working as a coach at the Chesapeake Boathouse in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Shald coached the Scholastic Rowing Program, focused on making rowing available to underprivileged youth.

    Prior to beginning his career in rowing, Shald spent four years training and performing with the San Francisco Ballet, the oldest ballet company in the nation.

CAMP SCHEDULE

  • Check-in: Monday at 8:30am at T. Gary Rogers Boathouse
  • Check-out: Thursday at 3:00pm at T. Gary Rogers Boathouse
  • Daily Schedule: Monday 8:30am-3:00pm, Tuesday-Thursday 9:00am-3:00pm

HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP

  • Ages: 14-18
  • Grades: 9-12

This camp is ideal for experienced rowers with at least one racing season completed who would like to take their rowing to the next level and experience what it is like to row at an elite Division I university. This camp is specifically designed to cover the breadth of rowing with a focus on skill development. There will be in-depth lectures and discussions of the rowing stroke, training regimens, and racing tactics. Coxswains will be given individual feedback and the opportunity to review recordings of their calls.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Due to University and NCAA Policies, we are not allowed to offer any transportation to and from camps. The airport closest to the Berkeley campus is Oakland International Airport; San Francisco International Airport is also within a reasonable distance. There are several options that we suggest. There are a few shuttle services that offer transportation to and from Oakland & San Francisco International Airports.

US Sports Camps does not provide hotel accommodations for campers or parents. If traveling from out of town, we recommend the following hotels:

HEALTH & RELEASE FORMS

All registered campers are required to have a parent or legal guardian fill out US Sports Camps’ mandatory Health & Release Forms online before arrival at camp. This camp does NOT require a doctor's signature on the forms.

CAMP INFORMATION PACKET

SCHOLARSHIPS

We cannot offer scholarships due to NCAA regulations. Our affiliation with NCAA coaches and schools puts us in a position where any scholarship money can be seen as an inducement to a future collegiate athlete. This puts our coaches and our host universities in jeopardy of damaging their status with the NCAA and incurring penalties at the hands of their organizing body.

GROUP DISCOUNTS

If five or more campers register together, each camper is eligible for a $20 discount. If 10 or more campers register together, each camper is eligible for a $40 discount.

Cal Crew Boathouse Facility

The T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center, the Bears home since 1924 and steeped in over 75 years of tradition, is a virtual Olympic museum. In fact, the Boathouse is believed to be home to more Olympic gold medalists than any other facility in the world. No fewer than 27 Olympic gold and nine World Championship gold medals have been won by Cal oarsmen who trained at the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center.

Located at 2999 Glascock Street in Oakland , the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center lies between the Park Street and Fruitvale Avenue bridges.
