Come join us at the inaugural Nike Swim Camp at Augustana University this summer in 2024, led by Augustana Swimming & Diving Head Coach, Andrew Makepeace! With over a decade of experience in coaching and a passion for cultivating excellence in young swimmers, Coach Makepeace brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to camp and will provide valuable insights into a holistic approach to success in swim. During these two sessions of camp, swimmers will have the opportunity to work closely with Coach Makepeace and his team to refine their stroke technique and elevate their skills. Through a combination of hands-on instruction, personalized feedback, and engaging lectures, participants will dive into various aspects of performance from goal setting and mental training, to strength and conditioning, and nutrition analysis.

Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Augustana University provides the perfect backdrop for an immersive swimming experience. As the largest private college in South Dakota, Augustana offers a supportive environment conducive to learning and growth.

The Nike Swim Camp at Augustana University is open to any and all entrants. For your safety and benefit, we recommend all participants have competitive swimming experience (e.g. U.S.S. Age Group, National Qualifies, High School Swimmers or Summer League Swimmers) with all four competitive strokes: Fly, Back, Breast and Freestyle.

    Augustana athletics has announced its second swimming & diving head coach in Andrew Makepeace. Makepeace joins the Vikings following his 11 years as the head coach for swimming & diving at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.

    While at the University of Findlay, Makepeace built the Oilers swimming and diving program into one of the best in the Midwest. Under his guidance, the women's team had 45 NCAA Division II All-Americans while the men's team had 18. He has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Coach of the Year six times and has won five G-MAC championships with the men and two with the women. Across his 11 seasons at Findlay, his student-athletes established 65 women's school records and 84 men's school records.

    Both of his teams at UF have also had much success in the classroom, earning Academic All-American honors in each of his seasons. In 2012-13, his men's squad recorded the highest GPA in all of NCAA Division II swimming.

    Prior to his time at Findlay, Makepeace was the assistant men's and women's swimming & diving coach at Minnesota State. He helped develop over 25 All-America student-athletes over his four years, while also aiding development in 50 NCAA qualifiers.

    Coach Makepeace garnered his Master of Science in sport & exercise physiology as well as his Bachelor of Arts of english literature from Minnesota State. He is a four-year letter winner for Minnesota State from 2004 to 2008. His accolades include the 2007 and 2008 team captain as well as Most Inspirational in 2008. He also earned all-conference honors in 2006 and 2007.

    Makepeace is married to his wife, Bree, and together they have a son, Boone, and daughter, Riplee. Bree is a 2016 and 2018 graduate of Augustana University.

    Taylor Beagle joins the Augustana coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 2022-23 season.

    The Lead, Deadwood, native rejoins the Vikings after graduating from Augustana in the spring of 2022 where she received bachelor degrees in biology and psychology.

    While at Augustana Beagle was a nine-time NCAA Divison II All-American, thirteen-time NSIC Champion, two-time NSIC Swimmer of the Year, three-time NSIC Swimmer of the Meet, and a three-time member of the NSIC All-Academic Team.

    Outside of athletics, Beagle shines in the classroom, she is a Myles Brand Award recipient, a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American, a two-time CoSIDA All-American, and a two-time CoSIDA All-District recipient.

    Beagle resides in Sioux Falls and is pursuing her master's degree in genetic counseling.

Camp Details

You can expect a high demand on these first-come-first-serve camper spots, so please be sure to register early. This summer, Augustana University is one week of overnight camp with an extended day camp (9:00am-9:00pm) option for ages 8-18. Campers will train each day at the Elmen Center Swimming Pool, home to Augustana University’s Men's and Women's Swimming teams.

  • Dates: July 15-18
  • Age Group: 8-18
  • Gender: Coed
  • Camp Type: Overnight, Extended Day (commuter)
  • Check-in: ALL Campers: Check-in Monday, between 1:00-2:00pm at Granksou Hall.
  • Check-out: There will be a swim meet at 9:00am followed by a closing ceremony at 11:00am. Camp concludes immediately following the closing ceremony. Overnight Campers check-out of the dorms and Extended Day Campers are picked up at the pool.
  • Day Schedule: MON 2PM-9:00PM, TUES-WED 9AM-9PM, THURS 9AM-11:30AM **Times subject to change
  • Meals: All meals are provided for Overnight campers. Lunch and dinner are provided for all Extended Day (commuter) campers.
  • Program: The Stroke Technique program is designed to provide competitive swimmers with a better understanding of swimming fundamentals. Stroke refinement along with constructive feedback will be the focus of the camp and allows each participant to gain a greater knowledge of proper stroke mechanics and ways to improve themselves individually.

CAMP CHECK-IN

Monday, July 15th

  • ALL Campers: Check-in Monday between 1:00pm-2:00pm at Granksou Hall.
  • Extended Day Campers will check in between 8:45am - 9:00am on remaining camp days.
CAMP CHECK-OUT

Thursday, July 18th

  • Extended Day Campers will check out at 9:00pm each day.
  • There will be a swim meet at 9:00am followed by a closing ceremony at 11:00am on the last day of camp. Camp concludes immediately following the closing ceremony. Overnight Campers check-out of the dorms and Extended Day Campers are picked up at the pool.
2024 HOUSING
  • Dorm: Granksou Hall
  • Number of Campers Per Room: 2 per room
  • Roommates: Rooms are assigned by age & roommate requests. Roommate requests must be mutual and received no later than 14 days before the start of camp. If you don't have a roommate request, you will be placed in a room with someone near your age. It will be a great opportunity to meet someone new!
  • Bathrooms: Shared
  • Linens: Not included. Bring linens or sleeping bag, pillow, pillowcase, and a towel.
  • Air Conditioning: YES - Dorm has A/C

SUPERVISION
The staff reside in the dormitories with the campers and participate in all activities. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited, and constitute, along with general misconduct, grounds for dismissal from camp without a refund.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE FEE?
  • Instruction: Morning, afternoon, and evening training sessions
  • Overnight campers: Dormitory housing on campus and all meals are provided.
  • Day campers: Dinner provided on Monday; Lunch is provided Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Supervision: Staff members reside in campers’ quarters and participate in all activities.
  • Camp T-shirt & Prizes: Campers at multi-day camps will receive a Nike Swim Camps t-shirt and prizes.
INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT & FACILITY
  • Ratio: 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio
  • Groupings: Campers are grouped by age, ability, and experience.
  • Equipment Needed: Please bring your water swimsuit, swim cap, googles and towel(s)
  • Facility: Elmen Center Swimming Pool
  • Medical Protocol: Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

EXTENDED DAY CAMPERS

Checklist of Things to Bring: We recommend that all Extended Day Campers bring a daily pack with the following items: swimsuit, swim cap, goggles, towel, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, sandals, water bottle, dry land gear (running shoes, t-shirt, athletic shorts, sweatshirt) and any other appropriate clothing for that day’s activities which will be described to you on the first day of camp.

Camp Schedule & Meals:

  • Monday: Extended Day Campers should arrive dressed and ready to swim. You will be assigned a counselor and given a complete schedule of all events during the week. Extended Day Campers stay until 9:00pm. Dinner is provided.
  • Tuesday-Wednesday: Extended Day Camper Hours – 9:00am-9:00pm. Lunch and dinner is provided.
  • Thursday: Extended Day Camper Hours - 9:00-11:30am. Check-out is immediately after the camp concludes.
TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.

Elmen Center Swimming Pool

The Elmen Center swimming pool serves host to the Augustana women's swimming team. The 6 lane, 25-yard long pool can be used to host duals as well as triangulars with teams. Augustana will use the pool to also train in preparation for Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition.

FAQ

  • Upon arrival at camp, campers are placed in groups with other swimmers having similar abilities and goals. Our camp staff will do their best to accommodate your needs, keeping in consideration your experience and desire to improve.
