SKILL LEVELS & GROUP PLACEMENT
Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the day. Participants are then sorted by ability and level of play per the Director's discretion - adjustments are made as needed during camp.
While there are many ways to define skill levels, the following descriptions are what the Camp Directors at Nike Tennis Camps will use to organize and group camp participants. At the time of registration, please choose the level that best represents your experience:
Beginner: Players at this level can rally the ball over the net, but need on-court experience. They are familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles. NTRP rating of 2.0 and above.
Intermediate: Players who can serve and maintain rallies with some consistency. They are fairly reliable with medium-paced shots but may struggle with certain strokes and lack precision in directional control and power. Generally play recreationally at their local club. NTRP rating of 3.0-3.5.
- Advanced: Players with dependable strokes and strong directional control. They display an all-around competitive spirit, improved court coverage, and are developing strategies for both singles and doubles play. These players compete regularly at local clubs or travel to participate in USTA tournaments. NTRP rating of 3.5 and above.
How to Assess Your NTRP Rating
- 1.5: Limited experience, still working on getting the ball into play.
- 2.0: Needs on-court experience, familiar with basic positions for singles and doubles.
- 2.5: Learning to judge ball trajectory, can sustain short rallies at a slow pace.
- 3.0: Fairly consistent with medium-paced shots, but lacks accuracy and control on directional changes.
- 3.5: Improved consistency, directional control on moderate shots, but lacks depth and variety.
- 4.0: Dependable strokes with directional and depth control during moderately paced play.
- 4.5: Can vary pace and spin, has good court coverage, can control depth, and develops game plans.
- 5.0: Can consistently hit with depth, power, and spin, and can control shots with a variety of spins and paces.
- 5.5+: Includes players with advanced skills, such as the ability to control depth, spin, and power, and develop game plans, as well as players at the professional level (6.0-7.0).
