Camp Coaches

  • Randy Bloemendaal

    Director

Randy Bloemendaal, 2010 Fred I. Dickerson Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, returned as the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Lees-McRae in August 2023. Bloemendaal returns to the High Country after serving as the Owner of Topspin Racquet & Swim Club in Lexington, South Carolina since January 2019 where he oversaw all tennis operations of the club and the operations of the Capital City Tennis Academy. "To be able to bring back a member of the Lees-McRae College Fred I. Dickerson Hall of Fame who played here and coached here with great success is truly a proud moment for many," said Craig McPhail, Vice President for Athletics and Club Sports. "Coach Bloemendaal will invigorate our tennis community, bring a high level of collegiate skill development, recruiting and tennis strategy to our Bobcat tennis teams as we use our new facility." In his first time at the helm of the Bobcat tennis programs, Bloemendaal was the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Coach of the Year six times and garnered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Coach of the Year three times. He was also a finalist for the ITA National Coach of the Year in 2001. Under Bloemendaal, the Lees-McRae women's tennis program won the CVAC Tournament twice in 2001 and 2002 and were crowned regular season champions in 2000, 2001, and 2002.On the men's side, the Bobcats collected tournament championships in five of six seasons from 1998-2003 and were the regular season champions in the CVAC for four straight years from 1998-2001.

    Randy Bloemendaal

    Director

"Thank you, President Lee King and Mr. Craig McPhail, for giving my family and I this opportunity to return back to our roots," said Bloemendaal. "My wife Nola and I are both alumni and we are so excited to bring our four children home to the mountains. The Lees-McRae motto "In the Mountains, of the Mountains, For the Mountains" has stayed with us as we have traveled the world." "Coach Fred I. Dickerson and Coach Don Baker both had a vision of excellence when they began the Lees-McRae tennis programs many years ago. They paved the way for our historic Bobcat athletic department. I'm excited to continue their legacies," said Bloemendaal. After leading Lees-McRae to 15 NCAA National Tournament appearances and nine CVAC Championships, Bloemendaal headed to Charleston Southern University where head the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach from August 2003 to August 2005. During his time in Charleston, Bloemendaal guided the Buccaneers to the NCAA record for best improvement for team wins in the 2004 season. Bloemendaal then made his way to Bloomington, Indiana as the Assistant Men's Tennis Coach at Indiana University and was elevated to Head Men's Tennis Coach in June 2007. At Indiana, he guided the Hoosiers men's program to their highest ranking in school history, school records for most wins in a season and most consecutive wins in a season and coached the top eight players in all-time wins at Indiana. Prior to becoming the Owner of Topspin Racquet & Swim Club, Bloemendaal was the Executive Director of Centercourt Athletic Club in Chatham, New Jersey where oversaw programs for over 800 performance players. "He is a proven winner, almost a native son to Banner Elk and someone who recognizes the long-storied tradition of tennis we have here at Lees-McRae, it's so good to welcome him back home!" Bloemendaal is a 1992 graduate of Lees-McRae College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and graduated as the program's all-time leader in singles victories (74) and doubles victories (89). "It is a true blessing to be back with Lees-McRae and I'm looking forward to being a part of the on-going success that is unique to our Bobcats," said Bloemendaal. "I'll see you on the court!"

While there are many ways to define skill levels, the following descriptions are what the Camp Directors at Nike Tennis Camps will use to organize and group camp participants. At the time of registration, please choose the level that best represents your athlete's experience:

  • Beginner: Players new to the game with little to no formal tennis instruction. They are still learning the fundamentals, focusing on basic skills and rules of the game. Typically play for recreation and have minimal match-play experience.

  • Intermediate: Players who can serve and sustain rallies with consistency. They are comfortable hitting medium-paced shots but may struggle with all strokes and directional control. Some may have participated in local tournaments and possess a UTR rating or are equivalent to a High School JV player.

  • Advanced: Players with dependable strokes and solid directional control. They demonstrate a strong competitive spirit, improved court coverage, and are developing strategies for both singles and doubles play. These players frequently compete in tournaments and have a USTA or UTR rating, or are equivalent to a High School Varsity player.
