GOLF TIP: CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLUB DURING COURSE PLAY

Choosing the right club image

What makes for a low score? Hitting accurate shots, performing well under pressure, and of course, knowing which club to use and when to use it. Check out the tips below to learn more about lowering your score!

A typical set of clubs that a player would have in their bag include a driver, some fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and a putter. All these clubs are designed for different situations and different shots for when the time comes. For example, the driver and fairway woods are used to achieve distance, while irons and wedges are used to attempt shots closer to the green. Depending on the distance, the lower irons are used for longer distances, and the higher irons are used for much shorter distances. Another very important club is the putter. The putter is typically used for the green and the fringe, depending on how close you are to the hole.

There are so many factors that come into play when making your club selection. Distance to green’s, hazards, weather conditions, and even how well you use each club. To choose the best club for each situation, you need to understand how far you hit each club. You can better understand this by calculating the distance of each shot you take. To understand the distance, practice this drill at the driving range. First, start with your wedge and see how far you can hit the ball on a normal swing. Next, grab your 9-iron and calculate the distance of that shot. Then 8-iron, 7-iron, and so on until you reach your driver.

During course play, you need to keep in mind the specific distance you can hit with each club. After determining which club, you will use, you can then ask yourself, “can you really hit this club that far?” In general, you should not base your club selection on the best outcome of your shot because it may be unreliable. However, you should base your club selection on the average outcome of a typical shot to refine consistency. For instance, if you are near a hazard, you may decide to use an iron rather than a wood, to hit an accurate shot on the fairway. This will allow you to avoid the hazard, possibly lowering the number of strokes you take.

Another key to shot selection is playing to your strengths. As a golfer, you should always play to your strengths to improve your skill and overall lower your score. If you feel that you perform better with certain clubs, then choose those clubs for the shots you believe you can take. The goal is to play to your strengths, trust in your game, and make decisions that will lead to lower scores. If you enjoy tips like this, check out our Nike Junior Golf Camps!
