GOLF TIP: PERFECT YOUR PRE-SHOT ROUTINE

Untitled 1

Why should you have a pre-shot routine? There are many benefits to a pre-shot routine that many players do not realize:

  1. Set the pace for your shot
  2. Perform better under pressure
  3. Gain confidence
  4. More Focus

This routine is an important mental aspect for each shot you take. Your routine should be practiced and performed without thought so it becomes second nature to your game. Amongst all the distractions on the course, the pre-shot routine can help you perform better under pressure and execute each shot to its full potential. Three main steps:

Approach

Typically, players start their pre-shot routine when they are walking or approaching the ball. This can start 40 yards behind the ball or even directly after you have hit your last shot. The goal of the approach is to assess your ball, think strategy, and develop a plan for your intended outcome. In this step, you consider any weather conditions or hazards, the distance from the hole, and a preferred target of where you would like to hit it. This will allow you to prepare for your shot and calculate the best possible outcome.

Visualize

The key to every good golf shot is visualization. Visualizing your shot before you take it can tremendously help the confidence in your swing. After you visualize, pick your intended target and an intermediary target. The intended target is where you plan to hit the ball. The intermediary target is a few inches in front of your ball that should align with your intended target. This allows for a long and short-distanced target that can help improve your aim.

Now that you have your targets, grab the club you would like to use and take a couple of practice swings. Practice swings are very helpful to dial in on your tempo and release any nerves before your shot.

Execute

Lastly, it’s time to address your ball and execute. Before taking your shot, ensure that your clubface is accurately lined up with your target and that you have a good stance and posture. Now, make sure to take a couple of deep breaths, focus, and execute.
