How to Improve at Setting a Volleyball
As many of us know, the abilities of a setter can make or break a team in volleyball. The setter’s ability to set consistent, well-placed balls to the hitters can be the difference between winning and losing. Setters need to be fast, ready to move to any ball that comes their way, and always prepared to make quick decisions on where to send the ball and when. Check out the following volleyball tips to improve your setting techniques and take your game to the next level:
Tip #1
The setter should always make sure they are between the ball and the net. Beginner level volleyball players often make the mistake of facing the antenna and not the ball. This makes it difficult for the setter to move and get to balls passed behind them. If a player is balanced, setters are always ready to explode and get to the ball.
Tip #2
When the ball leaves the setter’s hands, their hands should always finish pointing the direction they want the ball to go. Setting your team up in the most accurate position, allows your teammates and easier opportunity to score.
Coaches Insight
Setters have a great responsibility to lead the team on the floor. Coach Emily Hayes at Lewis and Clark College emphasizes the importance of a great setter. "You have heard this before, but you are the quarterback of the team. You need to embrace the mindset that your team looks to you. If you are hesitant, they are hesitant. It it your job to facilitate the offense, but really you are the one who gets the most criticism and is responsible for connecting your defense to your offense."
