Volleyball Tips for Beginners

Volleyball Beginner Footwork

Starting a new sport can be nerve-racking. The volleyball tips below will help you get rid of the nerves and feel confident to show up to your first volleyball practice. Practice some of these skills with our Nike Volleyball Camp Directors at one of our winter volleyball camps!

Tip #1: Get familiar with the rules. Whether you are playing indoor volleyball or beach volleyball it is crucial to know what the rules are. Do your research on the rules, basic volleyball terminology, game scoring, and violations. This will give you the confidence you need to start day 1!

Tip #2: “Bump, Set Spike!” Become familiar with the skills you need to be successful. Bump, set, spike is the classic set of skills that you may be familiar with. Don’t stop there, there are more skills than just those 3! The seven basic skills you will need to know are: bumping, volleying, setting, digging, attacking(spiking), blocking, and serving. Grab a volleyball and give each skill a try!

Tip #3: Good sportsmanship! While playing on the court, it is important to have respect. Always do your best to be a good volleyball teammate, be considerate to your opponents and referees, and always listen to your coach. Volleyball is competitive, but having fun with a good attitude is always most important.
