SPRINTS | HURDLES | JUMPS

Join Derek Drew and his staff at the one-of-a-kind Nike Track & Field Camp in Chicagoland!

He will be joined by Associate Head Track & Field Coach at Wisconsin, Kareem Jackson, World Champion, Aaliyah Brown, and Assistant Coach at USC, Brenton Emanuel.

This four-day camp will focus on sprints, jumps and hurdles with a merge of athletics & technology - offering event specific training, as well as informative educational breakout sessions on training, nutrition, and college specific topics such as recruiting.

Athletes will receive instruction from historic coaches & athletes while simultaneously learning about the new landscape of amateur athletics, including name, image, and likeness, better known as NIL.

    Derek Drew

    Camp Director & Organizer

    A native of Aurora, Illinois, Derek Drew attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from 2013 to 2016, where he excelled as a track and field athlete. As a Cougar, Drew earned 12 All-Ohio Valley Conference honors and capped his senior season as the conference champion in the 4x400-meter relay and the 400-meter hurdles. His outstanding performance in the 400-meter hurdles also earned him a spot as a 2016 NCAA West Region qualifier. Derek began his coaching career under Kareem Jackson at the University of Wisconsin during the 2016-17 season before joining Brenton Emanuel's coaching staff at Illinois State University from 2017 to 2019. With over 25 years of involvement in the sport of track and field, Derek's enduring passion for the sport is reflected in the strong relationships he has built throughout his career, as well as in initiatives like Champ Camp, which showcases his commitment to fostering growth and excellence in athletes.

    Coach Jackson was named the 2023 NCAA Division 1 Indoor Track & Field Men's Assistant Coach of the Year (Great Lakes Region), in his second year as associate head coach at Wisconsin, where he coached Lawrence Johnson to a seventh-place finish in the 60 meters at the 2023 NCAA DI Indoor Championships. His Badger athletes contributed 13 points towards Wisconsin’s winning the team title at the Big Ten Indoor Championships

    Since 2013, Kareem Jackson has coached the men's and women's sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps at Wisconsin.

    Brenton Emanuel was named USC assistant coach for sprints by Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Quincy Watts, on Aug. 8.“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Brenton Emanuel, his wife Jessica, and their family to the Trojan Family,” said Watts. “Brenton is an outstanding coach. His leadership, and reputation in the track community for cultivating and developing champions at the highest level are impressive. I am truly blessed to have Brenton join the USC Track and Field family.”

    Emanuel has served the last three seasons as the assistant coach for men’s and women’s sprint hurdles and relays at Nebraska where his athletes set six school records. He guided Darius Luff to the 2024 NCAA 110m hurdles title with a school-record time of 13.19 (+0.1). Emanuel guided his athletes to 13 All-America honors in his three seasons, as well as leading 11 Nebraska runners to All-Big Ten honors.

    Emanuel was named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year and twice he helped lead Nebraska to Big Ten team titles.

    “It is an honor to join such a prestigious program at USC,” said Emanuel. “I am so grateful for Coach Watts for opportunity to join the USC family. I would like to thank my wife, family, and the staff and athletes at the University of Nebraska. I cannot wait to give my all for USC and continue to help young men and women better themselves on and off the track Fight On!”

    Prior to Nebraska, Emanuel served the 2019-21 seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for Eastern Illinois, where he was three times named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. His men’s teams won the OVC outdoor team title all three seasons and twice his men’s cross country teams won the OVC title, the school’s first in 15 seasons.

    While at Eastern Illinois, he had 30 athletes post EIU all-time top 10 times, including school record-holders Pedra Hicks (400m H) and Danielle Frank (indoor 200m). He coached 30 athletes to OVC first-team honors and eight that advanced to the NCAA West Regional. He coached OVC Male Track Athlete of the Year in 2019-20 (Dustin Hatfield) and Adam Swanson in 2021.

    Emanuel served the 2018 season as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Illinois State and was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from July 2014 through June 2017. While at ISU, Emanuel was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018 and coached seven national qualifiers. He coached five All-Americans, 25 Missouri Valley Conference champions and 80 All-MVC honorees. Emanuel had three USATF junior qualifiers and his Illinois State athletes set 10 school records.

    He was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2014 at California University of Pennsylvania. He coached two All-PSAC performers and one World Juniors qualifier.

    Emanuel is a 2008 graduate of Eastern Illinois, where he competed for the men’s track team for four seasons. He served as a team captain and earned second-team All-OVC honors.

    A native of Plainfield, Ill., Emanuel and his wife, Jessica, have three daughters, Brooklyn, Kamryn and Laila.

    Jumps & Sprints Coach

    Harvey joined the coaching ranks following a decorated career at SIUE. He earned Second Team All-American distinction in 2018 after placing 12th in the long jump with a mark of 7.75m (25-05.50) at the NCAA Championships while also collecting Honorable Mention All-American status in the high jump. He qualified for the NCAA Championship in the high jump after clearing 2.15m (7-01.00) and finishing third at the NCAA West Regional. At the 2018 OVC Championships, he went on to be named Co-Field Athlete of the Year and OVC Championship MVP after placing first in the long and triple jumps, second in the high jump and third in the 100m.

    In 2017, Harvey won the long jump at the OVC Indoor Track and Field Championship with a leap of 8.17m, the longest jump by an American during the season and No. 1 in the world at the time. Harvey would go on to receive two All-America accolades in the long jump and high jump, respectively. At season's end, he was named the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA.

    In all, Harvey was a three-year team captain, a six-time NCAA Division I All-American, an 11-time OVC champion and four-time Athlete of the Year selection. In 2016, he was selected as U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier. In addition to competing on the track, Harvey was a five-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Southern Illinois and served as a conference representative from 2014 to 2018. He was also selected by the OVC to represent the conference at the NCAA Leadership Development Summit in 2016.

    Harvey owns a pair of degrees from SIUE, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2018 and a Master of Science in Sport and Exercise Psychology in 2019.

    Harvey is in his second season as an assistant track and field coach at Indiana State and joined the program in September 2023. Harvey works primarily with the Sycamores' sprinters and relays.

    The 2023-24 season saw multiple records set for the Sycamores as part of the program's first men's and women's indoor-outdoor conference championship sweep. Indiana State's quartet of Casey Hood Jr., Daunte Majors, Isiah Thomas and Tahj Johnson broke the program record in the 4x100m relay (39.64), while Hood Jr. (60m) and Terrance O'Bannon (100m) both won individual event MVC titles. Janiya Bowman (200m) and Angel Thomas (100m) both cracked the program top 10 in sprints events, while Michelle McDonald climbed the program top-10 charts in both short sprints events. Not to be outdone, the Sycamores' women's 4x100m relay team earned all-conference honors with the program's fastest time in nearly 10 years (45.48).

    Harvey comes to Terre Haute from Wagner University, where he was an assistant track and field coach for the Seahawks from 2021-23 and worked with the sprints, jumps, hurdles and relay groups. During his time on Staten Island, Wagner captured back-to-back NEC Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while the Seahawks also earned their best NEC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship finish in program history with a runner-up result at the 2023 NEC Indoor Championships. Harvey was part of the NEC Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Coaching Staffs of the Year in both 2022 and 2023.

    Harvey's tenure at Wagner saw 14 school records set, while 13 Seahawks earned NEC titles, in addition to four NEC team championships. 67 Seahawks who trained under Harvey earned NEC honors, while one Wagner student-athlete, Jason Marchese, qualified for the 2023 NCAA East First Round, reaching the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles. Wagner's indoor and outdoor men's 200m, men's 400m, men's 800m and men's 4x400m school records were all set by athletes Harvey coached. In addition to those records, Harvey also coached Wagner's school record holders in the men's 500m (indoor), men's 600m (indoor), men's 400m hurdles (outdoor), women's 4x400m relay (indoor), women's sprint medley relay (indoor), women's pole vault (indoor) and men's long jump (outdoor).

    In addition to his coach duties with the Seahawks, Harvey oversaw daily operations including budgets, staff meetings and scholarship allotment. He also helped apply a new social media strategy to team accounts which increased student-athlete visibility and improved Wagner's recruiting ability.

    Prior to his time at Wagner, Harvey began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin where he worked with the Badgers' sprints and jumps groups while working under the pole vault and multis coach during the 2019-20 season. In addition to his coaching duties with the Badgers, he also coordinated campus tours and visits for incoming recruits.

    La’Derrick Ward had much success as a competitor in the jumping events over 13 years. Ward competed at Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (2011-2015) and received Long Jump All-American honors during the 2013(Outdoor), 2014(Indoor, Outdoor), and 2015(Outdoor) seasons. He left with four school records, five Ohio Valley Conference Titles and represented Team USA for the 2014 Pan American Games. Post collegiately, Ward Ward became the 2017 USA Indoor Track and Field long jump champion.

    Coach Ward has helped lead the women’s track and field team to an indoor conference championship in 2019, and guided 4 student-athletes to All-American honors out of ten qualifiers over the past five seasons. Ward has done exceptional with developing the jumps group, replacing eighteen spots on the top 5 performance list between the triple jump and high jump events, as well as two new school records.

    La’Derrick came to Aquinas after spending two years as a part-time assistant coach in the jumps and sprints for Columbia College, as well as a volunteer coach for Missouri University.

The Nike Track & Field Camp in Chicagoland helps Middle and High School athletes develop over the summer under the guidance of elite professional and college coaching, while providing practical tools to help you prepare for the upcoming season and beyond!

Camp participants should have an interest and some experience in track & field (sprints/hurdles/jumps).

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.

MEDICAL PROTOCOL

Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

BEHAVIOR POLICIES

We may ask campers who require 1×1 supervision, disrupt the camp experience, or threaten the safety of themselves or others to leave camp. Behaviors meriting expulsion include, but are not limited to: a cause or threat of violence, putting themselves or others in danger, possession of a weapon, possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, drugs or illegal substance, robbery, damage to property, sexual misconduct or assault, harassment, hazing, racist remarks or acts, or intimidation. In those cases, we will contact a parent to pick up the child immediately. We do not issue refunds to campers who are asked to leave camp.
