  • Great drills - repetition was helpful for improvement. Encouraging, energetic, knowledgeable coaches. Chloe had a great time with the scrimmages. It was great to have her come home sore, tired, and happy each day.
  • I would ten out of ten recommend this to any one who wants to go beyond the level of High School and Club volleyball! The best part is that the Assistant coaches get really involved with the teams! Such a great atmosphere and the staff and players are just amazing!!
  • I had such a great time at the Cal Berkeley camp, I can't wait to do it again next summer. I'm so happy I learned to hit, set & block better and I really feel I have a better understanding of the game. I can't wait to try my new skills out on the court back at school:) I was really inspired by the Berkeley team coaches. I've always felt a little awkward cuz of my height ( I'm tall for my age), it was really awesome to see how tall the real players are and how athletic and strong they are. Thank you for the fun experience!
  • This camp is very fun but challenging. You definitely sweat a lot and learn a lot as you go. The coaches are super nice but they know how to give good advice for the whole team as well as one on one. You should go to this camp if you want to improve or keep your skills up.
  • Cal Nike camp was an excellent camp for all levels. All the camper's energy was high and coaches instructed them with enthusiasm and passion. Well organized by staff and great location!
  • The camp staff taught my daughter the fundamentals of volleyball in a fun and encouraging way. The camp experience was very positive; it not only build her interest but gives her the confidence to continue in the sport.
  • Our daughter gained valuable experience and knowledge from your qualified staff. She was also able to meet new friends and increased her passion to play volleyball.
  • She loved learning footwork on how to block and transitioning to attack. She loved that they demonstrated different serving techniques and worked on proper setting. She really loved the camp all around. Thank you, Coaches, AWESOME CAMP!! First time attending a Cal Camp and it won’t be the last. We will be definitely attending next summer as well!
  • Playing time was intense, fast-paced and well-orchestrated. She adored the coaches. Time in the dorms was full of making new friends and widely viewed tick-tocks. I know she will see some of these girls at national tournaments next club season and think fondly of her few days at Cal.
  • From a parent’s perspective, the Cal program is well organized, safe, competitive yet still fun, and exceptionally well staffed. I was very happy with the way the program was run and would highly recommend it to other families.
  • Being able to play a lot of games and really use the skills we had learned before made it fun and allowed me to gain much more experience on the court. I was able to make a lot of friends and I learned many new things by competing against them.
  • Experienced and relatable coaches, intense competition, wonderful people, and tons of reps. incredible experience, would recommend to any volleyball player looking to interact with new players and coaches and get lots of practice over the summer.
  • This is the second year that she has attended this camp; and this time she was apprehensive that she would not know anyone. However, she made friends immediately when she found out that other campers play for other volleyball clubs and that they remember her. She even learned how to serve the ball another way that she hadn't tried before. It would be more helpful for my daughter if the camp was more than three days; it's possible that when she joined next year for the intermediate level 2, that it may be more challenging and have more skill orientation for her.
  • The highlights of my experience included the other girls that were on my court, as they made everything more fun and we bonded really quickly. They helped me learn how to play with girls that I'd never seen before and how important communication is. Another highlight was listening to the college girls talk about what it was like to play at Cal, especially with a large amount of schoolwork. That was so fun to listen to because it really helped me get another perspective on college athletics that isn't always talked about as much but that is equally as important.
  • The technique tips she received helped her improve her game instantly! She wished it will be more days and wants to return next year. A great value compared to other camps that she has attended where the coaches' knowledge wasn’t as good. Here she got tips from players at the college level and it helped her raise her game. The coaches are helping teach pros and it shows!

  • She said the camp was no-nonsense skills clinic which is exactly what she wanted-- to quickly improve her skills- and she did. She feels grateful to the camp. I feel the price tag was well worth that outcome.

  • This was the first 'sleep away' camp for our daughter so was a little concerned. Asked her via text how the camp was and she texted back '10 out of 10! Love it.' Extremely well organized from registration thru drop off and pickup. Natalie had a great time. Will definitely be back next year. Thank you and all your staff for a great experience!

  • Baylie appreciated the chance to learn from such strong and kind coaches, as well as play with campers who are on a more competitive level. When I watched on Sunday, I specifically witnessed a great improvement in her serve!

Jen Malcom enters her second year as head coach of the Cal Volleyball program in 2025.

In 2024, Malcom’s squad posted the Golden Bears’ most conference wins since 2019 and their most total digs and digs per set since 2018. Cal’s 15.19 digs-per-set average ranked second in the ACC, while its 15.54 digs per set in conference play was tied for first among all ACC teams. Two of Malcom’s players opened up the season with ACC Offensive Player (Xuemeng Maggie Li) and Setter of the Week (Annalea Maeder) nods; Li finished the year with the most kills (463) and kills per set (4.06) by any Cal player since 2011, while setter Natalie Lau replaced an injured Maeder early in the season and posted the most assists per set (9.61) by a Cal player since 2016. On the defensive side of the ball, libero Gianna Bartalo posted the eighth-best digs total (468) in program history, while middle blocker Sawyer Thomsen notched the most total blocks (111) by a Cal player since 2013 as well as the most blocks per set (1.05) by a Bear since 2018. Following the season, four Cal players were named College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District, and seven made the All-ACC Academic Team, while Malcom herself was asked to lead the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program (NTDP) Girls U15-U17 Winter Session.

Serving as the associate head coach for UCLA in 2023, Malcom also acted as the interim head coach of the Bruins for seven matches, leading them to a 4-3 record while head coach Alfee Reft worked with the U.S. National Team. UCLA finished the year at 18-12 (10-10 Pac-12) and three victories over top-25 opponents, two of which were on the road in the final three weekends of the season. Two Bruins each earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Pacific South Region and All-Pac-12 honors.

Malcom spent seven years on the staff at her alma mater, Iowa State - first as assistant coach from 2016-18 and later as associate head coach from 2019-22. The Cyclones posted the program's first 20-win season in 2022, culminating in the latest of Malcom's five NCAA Tournament appearances with the Iowa State staff. She also helped lead the Cyclones to a National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) title in 2018. In total, 13 of Malcom's players earned a combined 20 AVCA All-Region nods, including a Regional Player of the Year and a Regional Freshman of the Year. Seven of her athletes also collected a total of 12 All-Big 12 awards.

Before her coaching stint at Iowa State, Malcom spent 2011-14 as an assistant at Virginia Tech, where she coached three AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions. Malcom was an assistant at Tennessee for the 2015 season, helping guide one of her players to SEC All-Freshman recognition.

As a player, Malcom spent the first two years of her collegiate career at Syracuse before transferring to Iowa State. A force at the net as a middle blocker, she led the Cyclones to the program's first Sweet 16 in 2007, as well as its first Elite Eight a year later. She still owns the Iowa State records for career hitting percentage (.318), block assists in a single match (13) and single-season block assists (159).

A native of Schaller, Iowa, Malcom graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology.

Andrew Sato will enter his second year as an assistant coach at Cal in 2025, working mainly with the setters. This is his second stint on the Golden Bears’ staff, having also acted as a volunteer assistant coach in 2017.

Under Sato’s tutelage in 2024, starting setter Annalea Maeder earned the season’s first ACC Setter of the Week award; following Maeder’s season-ending injury, Sato helped new starting setter Natalie Lau to the best assists-per-set average (9.61) by a Cal player since 2016, as well as the ACC’s fifth-highest overall assists total (942) and fourth-highest conference play assists total (653). Lau also posted the ACC’s best three-set (45 assists at Syracuse) and five-set (64 assists at Saint Mary’s) single-match performances that season, with the former also tying for the most assists in a three-set match by any ACC player since 2018.

During his three-year tenure at Cal State Fullerton (2021-23), Sato helped oversee the development of four All-Big West Honorable Mention players, as well as two All-Big West Freshman Team selections. Prior to his time with the Titans, Sato spent the 2020-21 season as an assistant with the UTSA Roadrunners after two years as volunteer assistant for powerhouse Nebraska. During those two seasons, the Huskers posted a combined 57-12 record, reaching the NCAA title match in 2018 and the Regional Final in 2019.

His decorated career at Long Beach State saw him collect 979 total digs, which stands to this day as a Long Beach State program record. Sato helped lead the 49ers to two straight Final Fours (2016-17), earning First Team All-America status in 2017 after an Honorable Mention nod the previous year; his other career accolades include four All-MPSF honors (2013 – All-Freshman; 2014 – Honorable Mention; 2016 – Honorable Mention; 2017 – Second-Team). As a senior, he also received the Erik Shoji Award, which is given to the top libero in Division I-II each year.

Sato’s playing career at Agoura High School included First Team All-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) honors as a junior and three All-Marmonte League selections, as well as All-Area recognition by the Daily Bulletin and the Ventura County Star. In celebration of his skill, Volleyball Magazine listed him on its Fab 50 and Top 24 Underclassmen to Watch lists.

He played six years for the Santa Monica Beach Club, leading his team to consecutive runner-up finishes in the 18-Open division of the Boys’ Junior National Championships (2010-11), earning All-Tournament status in the latter campaign. Sato also took to the court as a two-year member of the U.S. Youth National Team and played in both the World Championships and the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Championship, later acting as an alternate for the Junior National Team and training with the Senior National Team.

A native of Calabasas, Calif., Sato graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in sport psychology. His father Gary is currently an assistant coach for USC men’s volleyball and has been on the staff of four U.S. Men’s Olympic teams, including two medal-winning squads that also included Sato’s uncle Eric as a player (1988, 1992). His aunt Liane also played on two Olympic volleyball teams, earning a bronze medal in 1992.

Alyssa Andreno will enter her second year as an assistant coach at Cal in 2025, working mainly with the middle blockers.

Andreno coached a pair of outstanding middle blockers in Mikayla Hayden and Sawyer Thomsen for the 2024 season. Hayden was Cal’s most efficient hitter, averaging .324 on the year; in the second week of November, she posted 23 kills and zero errors (.605) across two matches. Thomsen recorded the best season by any Cal blocker in several years: her 111 total blocks were the most by a Golden Bear since 2013, while her average of 1.05 blocks per set were the most by a Cal player since 2018.

Andreno, a former professional middle blocker for SCU Emlichheim, arrived at Cal from Winthrop, where she was an assistant coach for the past two seasons. During her tenure at Winthrop, she saw the Eagles earn a combined 12 All-Big-South honors, including the 2022 Big South Freshman of the Year. In her first year, Andreno helped oversee the improvement of an Eagles defense that held opponents to just .175 hitting, leading to a third-place finish in the Big South and a semifinals appearance in the conference tournament. Winthrop appeared in the NIVC Tournament the next year after a Big South title match appearance and a second-place regular-season finish. Prior to joining the staff at Winthrop, Andreno lent her coaching experience to K2 Volleyball Club and Knoxville Catholic High School, helping the latter reach the State title match in 2020.

As a four-year player at Tennessee (2016-19), Andreno was part of a Tennessee team that had the biggest single-season turnaround in program history, finishing second in the SEC on the way to the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. She was among the team’s top-five blockers each year, leading the Lady Vols as a senior while also posting team top-five totals in kills and service aces. After her final season, Andreno was recognized as a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She earned a slew of high-level academic and community service honors throughout her collegiate career, graduating from Tennessee with a degree in recreation and sport management as well as a minor in business. She earned a master’s degree in business administration with distinction from the University of East London, at which she also competed on the volleyball team.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We cannot offer scholarships due to NCAA regulations. Our affiliation with NCAA coaches and schools puts us in a position where any scholarship money can be seen as an inducement to a future collegiate athlete. This puts our coaches and our host universities in jeopardy of damaging their status with the NCAA and incurring penalties at the hands of their organizing body.

Camps are open to any and all entrants, limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender.

WHAT FAMILIES SAY ABOUT Cal Volleyball Camps

73 Reviews
