Co-Director Meagan Owusu
Meagan Owusu, one of the rising stars in collegiate beach volleyball, enters her fourth season guiding Cal's beach volleyball program this spring.View Meagan's Bio ⟩
In three short years, Owusu has inserted Cal's program into the national conversation of NCAA beach volleyball, leading the Bears to a No. 12 final national ranking in 2018 and a third-place finish in the ultra-competitive Pac-12. Under Owusu's stewardship, Cal produced its first All-Americans last year in No. 5 pair Grace Campbell and Maddie Micheletti and first All-Pac-12 selections with First Team pick Mima Mirkovic and Second Team selection Iya Lindahl. The Bears have also risen to the occasion against the stiffest competition, knocking off a slew of ranked teams, including a victory over then-No. 4 USC last season.
Cal went 24-8 in 2018, easily the best record in the five-year history of the program.
In April of 2018, Owusu received the prestigious "Thirty Under 30" Award by the AVCA, which recognizes 30 up-and-coming coaching talents under the age of 30 across the country.
Owusu, a Cal alum who is one of only two players ever to play in two NCAA Final Fours for the Bears' indoor team, was elevated to head coach in July, 2015 while Rich Feller was named Director of Volleyball. As associate head coach before that, Owusu ran all the day-to-day operations of the program.
Owusu, formerly Meagan Schmitt, was a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection during her tenure as a defensive specialist for the Bears. She was a team captain in 2010 and helped Cal make its only two Final Four appearances in school history in 2007 and 2010. She also helped guide the Golden Bears to a pair of NCAA Elite Eight berths.
Immediately after graduating from Cal with a degree in American Studies and a minor in education, Owusu became a volunteer assistant coach for Loyola Marymount’s indoor team. She was promoted to full-time assistant the following year.
When Loyola Marymount debuted its sand volleyball program in 2013, Owusu became a full-time assistant coach for that program as well. She helped lead the Lions to a No. 8 final ranking in 2014 and twice led Loyola to the AVCA Sand National Championships. She also helped produce two AVCA San All-Americans. As a full-time assistant for Loyola Marymount's indoor program in 2012, she helped lead the Lions to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2005 with an 18-13 record. She was also instrumental in helping libero Betsi Metter earn West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons. Owusu is an accomplished beach volleyball player herself, having achieved a AAA rating from the California Beach Volleyball Association every year since 2012. She was the 2016 Santa Cruz Grand Prix Queen of the Beach and won the CBVA Santa Cruz Open. She also finished 13th at the Hermosa Beach NVL event.
Co-Director Derek Olson
Derek Olson, a longtime pro on the AVP and FIVB beach volleyball tours, enters his first season as Associate Head Coach after spending one year as an assistant coach for the Golden Bears.View Derek 's Bio ⟩
Regarded as an expert in the technical side of beach volleyball, Olson played a major role in the Bears forging their best season ever in 2018. An integral contributor to practice planning and execution as well as match coaching, Olson assisted head coach Meagan Owusu in guiding the Bears to a No. 12 final national ranking and third-place finish in the rugged Pac-12 Conference. He helped Cal amass a 24-8 overall record, easily the best in program history.
Olson has been an active competitor on the AVP Tour since 2008 and a part-time participant on the FIVB Tour since 2013. He's competed in 41 career events on the AVP Tour and 14 with the FIVB. He's also represented the United States in nine NORCECA events internationally.
Olson previously served as the beach director for the Coast Volleyball club in San Diego.
Olson has finished in the top-10 in 13 career AVP events, including as high as fifth on three different occassions. His most recent fifth-place finish came in 2016. He has three top-10 finishes on the international FIVB Tour, with a high of fifth place in 2013.
Olson also qualified for the FIVB's prestigious Rio Grand Slam last year. He has nine top-10 finishes in NORCECA events, including a second-place finish in 2015.
Olson received his degree in human physiology from Oregon in 2006 and began coaching on the junior level in 2010.

The Clark Kerr Sand Courts, nestled beneath a beautiful canopy of trees on the Southeastern side of campus, is home to the Cal beach volleyball program. Two regulation courts reside just off Sports Lane near the Golden Bear Recreation Center. Originally built in the late 1990s, the courts were home to mostly local enthusiasts who helped maintain the facility. The Bears began training and playing their home matches there when the program formed in 2014.

Best beach volleyball Camp!
January 22, 2018: This camp was the best beach volleyball camp my daughter, a sophomore in High School, has attended. Coaches are professional and fun, camp was fast-paced and high energy with fun drills and lots of playing and also individual attention. My daughter also learned a ton of new things she’d never heard before even though she’s played for couple of years and received really good feedback. Overall, this was a stellar first experience at Cal and we’ll go back for sure!
Super fun weekend!

Love every minute
My daughter and her fiend had an amazing time and loved every minute of the camp. They said the best part of the camp was how personable you were with each of them. Thank you for taking the time to talk to them about their future options. Juliana really didn't think she would be able to play in college because of her height, but after talking to you she said she definitely wants to look at her options of playing for a NAIA school or possibly a Division 3 or 2 college. Thank you for inspiring her to believe in herself and giving her the confidence to go after her dream of playing in college. I don't know what the future will hold for her but please know that you definitely made a difference to her.

The camp helped me learn a lot more technique that I hadn't know before, and I met new people in the process. It was great competing at such a high level while getting a feel for college volleyball.

Small class size
My week was really fun because there weren't a lot of girls. There was more individual attention and we got to do more reps.

Excited to come back
My 13 y/o daughter learned new techniques and strategies. She gained skill and confidence during the camp. She is excited to attend the camp again next year!

Go if you want to improve
This camp is very fun but challenging. You definitely sweat a lot and learn a lot as you go. The coaches are super nice but they know how to give good advice for the whole team as well as one on one. You should go to this camp if you want to improve or keep your skills up.
Loved the coaches
Personally, the coaches are one of my favorite parts when I go to camp. I've never had coaches who care about you so much and want you to improve. They take so much time to instruct us on everything.
They have excellent coaches and instruction. They create a sense of camaraderie amongst the players and they care for each student individually. They are always available to answer questions for me as a parent if I have any and they are very easy to reach if I need to contact them immediately.
