    Camp Director

Kahala Kabalis Hoke is in her 14th year as head coach of the Chaminade University women's volleyball team and also heads the beach volleyball program which began its debut season in spring 2024.

The former Silversword outside hitter is the program's all-time winningest coach with 242 victories. In January 2012, she was hired as the ninth head coach in program history, returning to the alma mater which she helped lead to unprecedented heights.

Under her tutelage, Kabalis Hoke has achieved success that no other Silversword volleyball team has, capturing three Pacific West Conference titles, tallying six seasons with 20 wins or more, five postseason berths since 2018 and three PacWest Coach of the Year honors.

In 2024, the Silverswords became the first PacWest squad since 2017 to finish with an unbeaten conference slate, wrapping up the season at 20-0 to claim the program's third conference title in the past four seasons. But it was early in the season where the 'Swords received early headlines, claiming wins over the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 8 teams in the AVCA poll. They reached the finals of the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge, the top preseason volleyball tournament in the nation, and would see their highest ever national ranking of No. 4 in late November. The postseason awards included three AVCA All-Americans (Letizia Cammillucci, third team; Anna Stucchi, third team; Grace Talpash, honorable mention) while Kabalis Hoke was the PacWest Coach of the Year.

In 2023, the Silverswords won a record 30 matches, earning the top seed in the NCAA Division II West Region for the first time in program history. The 'Swords were ranked as high at No. 12 in the AVCA Top 25 Poll -- the highest in their Division II era -- and ended the year 13th. Setter Leilani Ama put together a stellar rookie campaign as the AVCA National Freshman of the Year, and PacWest Setter and Freshman of the Year honors. Middle blocker Lizanyela Lopez was the conference's Newcomer of the Year, marking the fifth straight year the award went to a 'Sword. And right-side hitter Ajack Malual was named to the AVCA All-America Third Team, marking the first time ever a Silversword was named to the first, second or third team.

The 2022 squad made history with their second straight conference title and reaching the NCAA West Region championship match, both school firsts. As the No. 8 seed in the West, the Silverswords pulled off two upsets -- top-seeded and nationally-fourth-ranked Alaska Anchorage and fourth seed Cal Poly Pomona -- to reach the Division II version of the Sweet 16 with the team finishing the final AVCA national rankings at No. 24. Eight 'Swords were honored on the All-PacWest squads with setter Alexia Byrnes earning Player and Setter of the Year honors while Sasha Colombo was the Newcomer of the Year with Kabalis Hoke earning Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Byrnes, Colombo and Lataisia Saulala were also named All-West Region by the D2CCA and AVCA with Byrnes and Colombo earning All-American honors by the latter.

In 2021, the Silverswords won a program-record 27 matches, capturing their first Pacific West Conference title since 1996 and a No. 3-seeding in the NCAA West Regional. Chaminade also broke into the AVCA national rankings for the first time in nearly 16 years, seeing their name in the rankings for eight weeks. As a result of the historic season, Kabalis Hoke was voted as the PacWest Coach of the Year while six 'Swords were selected to the all-conference teams including Player of the Year Brooklen Pe'a, who became the first 'Sword who won the conference's top playing honor since Doris Bikar in 1997. Byrnes was also honored as the conference's Setter and Newcomer of the Year. Kabalis Hoke was also honored as the AVCA West Region Coach of the Year while Pe'a, Byrnes and libero Anna Dalla Vecchia earned all-region and All-America honors by the AVCA

She continued to lead the resurrection of the program with a 22-8 overall record in 2019, marking the first time in school history the 'Swords posted consecutive 20-win seasons. The 'Swords spent nearly seven weeks atop the Pacific West Conference standings before finishing at 16-6 and tied for third for the second straight year. During that season, the 'Swords had a school-record 13-match winning streak and claimed another by winning 12 straight conference matches.

Junior right-side hitter Rachel Reedy, senior outside hitter Emma Tecklenburg and sophomore middle blocker Latasia Saulala were honored on the All-PacWest Teams while junior libero Leka Kiner-Falefa earned conference Newcomer of the Year. Reedy was named to the AVCA All-America honorable mention team, becoming just the second 'Sword to garner All-America honors while Tecklenburg ended her stellar career second on the school's all-time kills list with 1,292.

The magical 2018 season saw the Silverswords by return to postseason by qualifying for the NCAA West Regional, ending a 14-year drought. Five 'Swords were named to the All-PacWest Teams with Tecklenburg earning D2CCA All-West Region honors.

The 2017 squad went 16-12, marking the first time ever the program has enjoyed three consecutive winning seasons. It was also the fourth straight season of reaching double-digit wins.

In each of her first four seasons at the helm, the Silverswords increased their win total including a 19-9 mark in 2015, the second-most wins in school history and the program's first winning record since 2007. During the '15 season, senior outside hitter Keani Passi became the program's first-ever All-American, earning honorable mention honors by the AVCA after putting down 489 kills, a record during the rally-scoring era.

In the first season under her direction in 2012, Kabalis Hoke helped re-energize the program as the Silverswords won seven matches, five more in the year before her arrival. The 2013 season saw nine victories and a 12-win season the following year.

Her teams have also enjoyed great success in the classroom with 87 being named Academic All-PacWest since taking charge of the program. At least 10 have been named academic all-conference each year since 2014-15.

In the inaugural season of the beach volleyball program, the 'Swords won seven matches in 2024 as a majority of their opponents came against well-established Division I programs.

Kabalis Hoke’s volleyball career was stamped profoundly by helping the Silverswords to their first top-25 ranking in the regional poll, and by making a bold statement in the regional tournament by advancing to the West Region semi-finals in 2004 and earning a place on the Division II Regional All-Tournament Team. She was an All-PacWest First Team selection in 2003 and 2004, and on the 2004 PacWest All-Academic Team and also ranked as one of the top leaders in kills, digs, and service aces per set in the PacWest.

From 2009-11, Kabalis Hoke served as assistant coach for the Hawai`i Pacific University women’s volleyball program where the then-Sea Warriors achieved a .500 record and ranked top five in the PacWest during those three seasons.

In the summer of 2011, she took management of the LeJardin Academy girls volleyball program and guided the varsity team to its first winning season and one win shy of the ILH Division II tournament semi-finals. Before HPU and LeJardin, Kabalis Hoke was the head coach for Radford High School’s girls volleyball program from 2006-08, leading the former OIA Division II state champions to a successful transition into OIA Division I competition.

    Kolby Kanetake

    Coach

The 2024 season is the fifth for Associate Head Coach Kolby Kanetake with the Chaminade University women's volleyball team and is the primary assistant to head coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke. He is also the assistant for the inaugural beach volleyball program which began competition in spring 2024. He was elevated to the title of Associate Head Coach in September 2023.

In his first three years as the program's full-time assistant coach, the Silverswords captured two Pacific West Conference titles and made three NCAA West Region appearances.

The 2023 squad won a record 30 matches and earned the No. 1 seed at the NCAA West Regional for the first time ever. During the season, the Silverswords reached their highest national ranking in their Division II era, reaching No. 12 in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Poll, and finished the season 13th. Setter Leilani Ama had a stellar season, earning AVCA National Freshman of the Year honors but also the PacWest Freshman and Setter of the Year. Middle blocker Lizanyela Lopez became the fifth straight Chaminade player to earn the conference's Newcomer of the Year award while right-side hitter Ajack Malaul was an AVCA All-America Third Team honoree, the first time a 'Sword was named to the first, second or third team.

The inaugural season of beach volleyball in 2024 saw the 'Swords finish with nine wins against competition of primarily more-established Division I opponents.

In 2022, the 26-win 'Swords earned back-to-back PacWest titles and reached the championship match at the West Regional in Bellingham, Washington. As the No. 8 seed in the region, they pulled off two upsets -- No. 1 seed Alaska Anchorage and No. 4 seed Cal Poly Pomona -- to reach the regional title match for the first time in school history. Chaminade would finish No. 24 in the final AVCA national rankings while eight 'Swords were honored by the PacWest including Player and Setter of the Year, Alexia Byrnes, and Newcomer of the Year, Sasha Colombo. Both were named to All-West Region and All-America by the AVCA while Lataisia Saulala was also honored as a D2CCA All-West Region selection.

In his first year as the full-time assistant in 2021, Kanetake helped the Silverswords achieve what may be the greatest season in program history, capturing its first Pacific West Conference title since 1996 with a team-record 27 victories. Six 'Swords were honored on the All-PacWest Teams led by Player of the Year Brooklen Pe'a and Byrnes earning conference Setter and Newcomer of the Year. The duo, along with libero Anna Dalla Vecchia, were named all-region and AVCA All-Americans while Kabalis Hoke was the PacWest and AVCA West Region Coach of the Year. Kanetake himself was honored by the AVCA with the prestigious "Thirty Under 30" Award which honors the rising stars in the national volleyball community.

In his first year as the part-time assistant, Kanetake helped the Silverswords adjust from the traditional fall season that was moved to the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that spring, the 'Swords were near the top of nearly all statistical categories in the Pacific West Conference including hitting percentage (.211), kills (12.58), assists (11.62) and blocks (2.11), the latter of which is the most by a Chaminade team since 2016 and the second-highest in school history.

Kanetake came to Chaminade after serving as Program Director and Head Coach for the University Laboratory High School girls' volleyball team in Honolulu. He also was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco (indoor and beach), the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. At USF and Cal, he was responsible for scouting, video breakdown, statistics, training the liberos and outside hitters in passing and defense as well as training blocking.

Kanetake played four years for the UH men's volleyball team from 2013 to '16 and was a two-time AVCA All-American and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) honoree. He was on the AVCA All-America Second Team as a senior and honorable mention as a junior while earning All-MPSF Second Team honors twice. A two-year captain, Kanetake departed the Rainbow Warriors third in the career digs list with 775 and, as of the summer of 2021, seventh in the program's career digs average list at 2.27. During his junior season, Hawai'i finished with a 24-7 mark with a 16-match winning streak and a sixth-place finish in the 2015 NCAA Championships.

He is currently the owner, club director and head coach of the Aloha State Volleyball Club which he founded in 2018, training girls age 12-18. His club focuses on girls who want to accomplish their goals into playing collegiate volleyball.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We cannot offer scholarships due to NCAA regulations. Our affiliation with NCAA coaches and schools puts us in a position where any scholarship money can be seen as an inducement to a future collegiate athlete. This puts our coaches and our host universities in jeopardy of damaging their status with the NCAA and incurring penalties at the hands of their organizing body.
