Come join us this winter at the Spartan Water Polo Camp at San Jose State University directed by SJSU head coach, Beth Harbets and assistant coach, Cristian Tanase. The SJSU main campus is located in downtown San Jose and is an essential partner in the economic, cultural and social development of Silicon Valley and California.

    A two-time San José State University All-American, Beth Harberts is in her third season as the Spartans’ women’s water polo head coach.

    In her first two seasons as the Spartans head coach, San José State was ranked No. 14 in the final national coaches poll in 2020 and #16 in 2021. The 2020 season was highlighted by a win over #6-Cal on the Berkeley campus and a #14-ranking in the final national coaches poll.

    Each season, one Spartan was named an honorable mention All-America player by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). In 2021, it was Lili Urvari and Olga Descalzi received the same recognition in 2020.

    Academically, San José State ranks with the top women's water polo teams nationally and in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) - the No. 1 conference nationally in the sport. In 2020 and 2021, the Spartans earned two ACWPC team awards, 26 ACWPC individual honors, and 25 MPSF academic awards. Only UCLA can match San José State for the number of MPSF all-academic awards the last two seasons.

    Harberts was appointed the head coach in August 2019 after three seasons on the San Jose State men’s and women's water polo coaching staff as an assistant coach. She was a volunteer assistant for the men's team in 2015.

    The Spartan women’s water polo head coach has a vast array of club and community college coaching experience since she finished her San Jose State playing career in 2008.

    She was the West Valley College women’s water polo head coach for six seasons (2009-14). The 2014 Vikings team was her best, posting a 12-10 win-loss record, a second-place finish in the regular season Coast Conference standings, second place in the conference tournament and an invitation to the NorCal Championship.

    As the 2015 San Jose State men’s club team head coach, Harberts led the club to a 16th-place ranking in the final national poll and was named the Sierra Pacific Conference Coach of the Year.

    She also has head coaching experience with co-ed, boys, and girls club programs in the U12, U14, U16 and U18 age ranges in Santa Clara County.

    One of the top goal scorers in school history, Harberts was the seventh San Jose State women’s water polo player to score at least 100 goals and finished her career with 112 scores. She was a 2007 third-team All-American as a junior and an honorable mention All-American her senior season. The 2007 Spartans were the first San Jose State team to score 300 goals in a season and were ranked sixth in the final national coaches’ poll.

    The 2007 San Jose State University graduate majored in kinesiology. She was a two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Scholar All-American and a three-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic team honoree. Harberts earned her master’s degree in kinesiology from San Jose State in 2014.

    She has certifications as an aquatics facilities operator, an American Red Cross lifeguard instructor, an American Red Cross lifeguard, and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer.

    An Alumni of the SJSU Men’s Water Polo Program, Cristian Tanase is in his first year as an assistant coach for the SJSU women’s team.

    His past experience comes from head coaching at local Bay Area high schools such as The Harker School, Adrian Wilcox High School, and assisting at Los Gatos High School. While coaching the girl’s team at The Harker School, the team achieved the highest program ranking during the 2022 season with a 2nd place finish in the Central Coast Section. He is also coaching club at San Jose Express Water Polo Club and he is involved with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) assisting the Cadet Team for the Pacific Zone.

    Cristian graduated in 2021 with a degree in Kinesiology focusing in exercise science as well as minoring in Nutrition for sport performance. He achieved the Dean’s Scholar Award in 2019-2020 and 2020-21. As a student-athlete, Cristian was a two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Academic All-America award in 2018 and 2019.

    Cristian earned his master’s degree in sports psychology at San Jose State in 2022, where he served as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. As a strength and conditioning coach he was leading the training protocols for the physical preparation of women’s water polo, men’s water polo, women’s swimming & diving, and track & field athletes.

    Cristian is originally from Bucharest, Romania where he grew up playing for Steaua Bucharest and Rapid Bucharest.

Camp Details

This winter, San Jose State is offering one session of day camp for ages 10-18. Upon arrival at camp, campers are placed in groups with other swimmers having similar abilities and goals. Our camp staff will do their best to accommodate your needs, keeping in consideration your experience and desire to improve.

  • Program: The Skills Camp program is designed for youth and high school players (Ages 10-18). This program focuses on advanced skills, position specific training for divers, shooters, goalies and 2 meter offense & defense, team concepts and an overall intense level of competition. Campers also have the opportunity to compete daily in games against each other.

CAMP CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT

Saturday, December 20th & Sunday, December 21st

  • Check-in between 8:30-9:00am at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center.
  • Camp concludes at 3:00pm each day.

There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to drop off and pick up your child on time.

MEALS

Lunch is NOT provided each day. Please bring a healthy lunch and snacks each day.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE FEE?
  • Instruction: Morning and afternoon training sessions
  • Supervision: Campers are supervised by staff during camp hours.
  • Camp T-shirt & Prizes: Campers will receive a Nike Water Polo Camps t-shirt and prizes.
INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT & FACILITY
  • Ratio: 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio
  • Groupings: Campers are grouped by age, ability, and experience.
  • Equipment Needed: Please bring your water swimsuit, swim cap, googles and towel(s)
  • Facility: Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC)
  • Medical Protocol: Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE

Team Discount: If five or more campers register together, each camper is eligible for a $25 discount. Please have a team contact reach out directly to the USSC office at 1-800-645-3226 to receive a discount code to identify your group. Campers may then register through the website at their convenience and apply the coupon code during check-out.

SRAC Pool

The Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC) opened in 2019. The sparkling building serves the entire student body, with cardio and weight areas, workout classrooms, a climbing wall and many other amenities. The facility also includes two outdoor pools - one for recreation and casual use and a full competition pool.

The competition pool is on the East end of the building and is the home of the San Jose State men's and women's water polo teams and the women's swimming and diving team. Conveniently located on campus next to the dining commons and the dorms, it is a perfect location to train for Spartan student-athletes.

The competition pool has coaches offices, storage and brand new locker rooms at one end and grandstands along one side.
