Abby Martin - Coach

The Oswego State Athletics Department hired Abby Martin as its first full-time softball coach in August of 2015.

The Oswego State Athletics Department hired Abby Martin as its first full-time softball coach in August of 2015.
For the second-straight season, Martin led the Lakers to the SUNYAC Championship in 2018. Martin oversaw two All-Region honorees and three All-SUNYAC recipients. Most impressively, she coached Rebecca Vilchez to Player and Pitcher of the Year nods from the conference coaches, the first player in SUNYAC history to win both awards in the same season. Vilchez was also the first Oswego player to win either award.

In her second season at the helm, Martin led the team to 17 wins, the most since 2013. The Lakers earned a fourth-place finish at the SUNYAC Championship, following a No. 2 seed, which is the highest in the program's history. Martin also earned conference Coach of the Year honors and landed two players on the All-SUNYAC second team.

Martin came to Oswego State by way of the University of Buffalo, where she was an assistant softball coach in charge of the pitching staff. Before that, she held the same position at her alma mater Cortland, helping lead the Red Dragons all the way to the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship title game where they eventually fell to Tufts University. That same year, Martin and the rest of Cortland softball staff were selected as the NFCA DIII North East Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.

Originally, Martin attended Division I Monmouth University before transferring to Cortland. In her junior year with the Red Dragons, she held a perfect 8-0 record in the circle, while batting .360 at the plate as well. Martin only improved her senior year, as she recorded a 2.58 ERA, striking out 97 batters in 84 innings. The pitcher also held a .393 batting average to go along with a team-best 18 doubles. Concluding her senior year, the Oswego, N.Y. native was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region Team selection, an NFCA First Team All-American as a utility player and a Capital One Academic All-American.

Aside from coaching at the collegiate level, Martin has worked with girls at Cortland’s summer softball clinics. She has also provided private lessons for athletes, helping them hone in on a variety of softball skills.

Martin holds two degrees from Cortland, a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Master of Science in Sport Management. She currently resides in Oswego.
