AT ADRIAN

  • Despite a shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bulldogs showed promise of a program on the rise with a 4-1 start--matching the team's best since 2015.
  • Four Bulldogs earned five Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association athlete of the week awards--none in the previous four years until Wetzel's arrival.
  • The Bulldogs have been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Warrior and New Balance Division III National Team of the Week three times during his tenure, which is the most in MIAA history.
  • Mentored the only multi-USILA Warrior and New Balance weekly honoree in conference history, Max Leventis (March 10, 2020; Feb. 25, 2019).
  • Under Wetzel's tutelage, Leventis already has set school records for groundballs in a game (22 at Earlham, 3/7/2020) and season (174, 2019) as well as face-off wins in a game (26 vs Kalamazoo, 4/23/2019) and season (235, 2019) through just two seasons.
  • As a freshman, Leventis ranked third nationally with 12.43 ground balls per game to pace the MIAA in 2019. As a team, Adrian scooped up 42.93 per game that year.
  • Twenty-one team and individual school records have been broken or tied under Wetzel's watch.
  • In the truncated 2020 campaign, sophomore attack Chris French led the MIAA in goals (21) and shots (57), classmate Peyton Gasche topped the conference in total points (33) and assists (16), and Leventis paced the MIAA with 50 ground balls and 84 face-off wins.
  • As a team last spring, the Bulldogs were first in caused turnovers and man-up goals.
  • During Wetzel's first season in 2019, the team's No. 1 MIAA statistical rankings included 38.29 shots per game, 30.8 shooting percentage, 65.3 shots-on-goal percentage, 30 man-up goals, 36.6 man-up percentage,

PRIOR TO CURRENT POSITION

  • Coached three seasons at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He worked with the offense in 2016 and 2017 before leading the defense in 2018; he also mentored the face-off men each season.
  • In 2016, he helped the Lords reach the North Coast Athletic Conference Semifinals, earn six All-NCAC selections, one United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American (the program's first since 2007) and one USILA Scholar All-American.
  • In 2016 & 2017, the Lords' offense ranked as one of the best in the country, ranking in the Top 25 in both goals per game and man-up percentage while also earning three All-NCAC selections in 2017.
  • In 2018, he led a defensive unit that was key in Kenyon returning to the NCAC Semifinals. Wetzel coached the 2018 NCAC Newcomer of the Year on the defensive end, the program's first such honor since 2013.
  • Wetzel began his coaching career as the assistant coach at Albion College. He had been with the Albion program since its second season of existence, and over the course of five seasons the Britons' win total improved each year while recording double digit wins in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
  • The 2013 and 2014 seasons saw Albion finish as the conference runner-up to Adrian College. The 2015 season culminated in the program's first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, first NCAA Tournament bid, and their first NCAA tournament victory. While at Albion, Wetzel worked with both the offense and defense during his five-season stint and coached 31 all-conference selections, one Scholar All-American and one All-American.
