Caroline Powers Ellis

Caroline Powers Ellis Michigan State University

Former Michigan State All-American and Big Ten Golfer of the Year Caroline Powers-Ellis will enter her sixth season as assistant coach in 2021-22. Powers was named assistant women's golf coach by head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll in June 2016.

Powers-Ellis plays a major role in the recruitment and growth of players. Additionally, she assists with all areas of developing the Spartan players and program, including practice plans, tournament preparation, coordination of camps and clinics, and organizing the annual Spartan Golf Classic Fundraiser.

Michigan State earned its third Big Ten title during Powers-Ellis’ tenure in 2021 as it was one of three tournaments the Spartans won last season. MSU finished in the top six at the NCAA Louisville Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships where the Spartans placed 16th.

Three Spartans garnered All-Big Ten honors, including Yurika Tanida, Valery Plata and Paz Marfa Sans – who collected the honor for the fourth consecutive season. Plata became the second player during Powers-Ellis’ time on staff to earn the Big Ten’s Mary Fossum Award for lowest stroke average to par.

In the shortened 2019-20 season, Powers-Ellis helped the Spartans to a pair of tournament wins – the Fossum Invitational in East Lansing and later the prestigious Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, where the Spartans topped an 18-team field that included seven teams in the top 20. Individually, two Spartans claimed medalist honors as senior Paz Marfa Sans won the Fossum and sophomore Valery Plata captured the Tar Heel Invitational crown. Plata was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and was one of a record four Spartans to earn All-Big Ten accolades.

The Spartans made their third consecutive NCAA regional appearance during Powers-Ellis' time on the staff in 2018-19. Powers-Ellis helped coach three players - Ally Geer-Park, Paz Marfa Sans and Yurika Tanida - earn all-conference accolades.

Powers-Ellis helped the Spartans to their second consecutive Big Ten title in 2018 and helped mentor three players - Sarah Burnham, Ally Geer and Paz Marfa Sans - to record the three lowest single-season averages in school history. Burnham and Geer also earned All-America honors.

In her first year back at her alma mater, Powers-Ellis helped mentor a young Spartan team to great success. A week after winning the Lady Buckeye Invitational, MSU captured its fourth Big Ten Championship in the last seven years. MSU went on to a third-place showing at the NCAA Athens Regional and then 19th at the NCAA Championships.

Powers-Ellis was named to the WeCOACH Coaches Council for the 2019-20 season. Previously known as the Alliance of Women Coaches, WeCOACH has become the premier membership organization committed to recruiting, advancing, and retaining women coaches across all sports and levels.

Named the 2013 Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Year, Powers-Ellis completed her career as the school's all-time record holder in scoring average (74.26) and owns three of the top four single-season scoring averages in program history. A three-time honorable mention All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection, Powers-Ellis helped lead the Spartans to back-to-back Big Ten Championships in 2011 and 2012 and a school-record finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships as the team tied for ninth place. She qualified as an individual for the 2011 NCAA Championships and placed sixth, tied for the highest ever by a Spartan at nationals. Her scoring average of 73.53 as a sophomore in 2010-11 was a school record at the time.

One of the most decorated women's golfer in Michigan State history, Powers-Ellis is one of only two women's athletes ever at MSU to earn the Alderton Award three times.
