Carrie Seymour

Carrie Seymour is in her 31st year as the Pace Women's Basketball Head Coach, entering the 2022-23 season with a record of 510-342 at the helm of the Setters program. Pace women's basketball has made it to the NCAA Tournament 11 times under the leadership of Seymour, including two Elite Eight appearances: 2001 and 2022

Across her terrific Setter tenure, Seymour has averaged more than 17 wins per season since beginning in 1992. On January 26, 2002, Seymour reached the 200-win mark with an 81-70 victory over Merrimack. To date, she is the fourth-fastest Division II women’s basketball coach to reach 100 victories, accomplishing the feat in 127 games. On February 23, 2008 against Le Moyne, she earned her 300th victory of her illustrious career. She then picked up win No. 400 on December 14, 2013 against Saint Thomas Aquinas. Career win No. 500 was against Saint Michael's College on Jan. 22, 2022. She became only the 17th active Division II head coach to accomplish the feat.

Well known for her ability to recruit quality student-athletes who graduate and go on to establish successful careers, Seymour has guided her teams to seventeen postseason appearances. The Setters have participated in 11 NCAA Tournaments, highlighted by two Division II Elite Eight appearances, 2021-22 and 2000-01; and the Sweet Sixteen in 1993-94 and 2010-11. Pace has also won three Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II championships in 1993, 1996 and 1997. Coach Seymour has been recognized regionally and nationally for her efforts, winning numerous coaching awards.

She earned the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award following the 1993-94 season, is a two-time WBCA District Coach of the Year (1993-94 and 1999-00) and has been named Division II Coach of the Year by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) seven times: 1996, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2022.

One of the main constants of Seymour’s Pace teams has been defense. The Setters have ranked among the top 10 teams nationally in defensive field goal percentage and scoring defense in five of the past 15 seasons, leading the nation in defensive field goal percentage in 1993, 1994 and 1997. Seymour’s 2000-01 squad finished 12th in defensive field goal percentage and 16th in scoring defense. The Setters led the nation in both categories in 1993-94 and possess the second-best all-time defensive field goal percentage among Division II schools when they held opponents to a .308 shooting percentage in 1993-94.

Before coming to Pace, she began coaching at Eastern Connecticut State University where she was an assistant for a year. She then took on one-year stints as an assistant at Marist College and the College of the Holy Cross, before working the sidelines at St. John’s University for six seasons. She arrived on the Pace campus in 1992 and the Setters teams have thrived ever since, posting twelve 20-win seasons.

Seymour attended Eastern Connecticut State University where she was an all-star as a player. In 1983, she received her B.A. in Psychology with minors in Physical Education and Coaching. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from St. John’s University in 1993.

Seymour is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and is a national chairperson on the Division II State Farm All-American Committee. She has previously served on the Division II IKON/WBCA Coach of the Year Committee and the Coaching Women’s Basketball Magazine editorial board.
