Dan Ramsay

Dan Ramsay, the eighth former Whitworth player to serve as head coach of the Pirates since 1955, heads into his tenth season leading the Whitworth nine in 2017-18. Ramsay has led the Bucs to the NCAA Division III tournament three times and was named Northwest Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2016 and West Region Coach of the Year by D3baseball.com and the ABCA in 2012. Ramsay has earned 183 career victories and sits second all-time in wins at Whitworth behind Paul Merkel.

In his eight years at Whitworth Ramsay has coached a First Team All-American and two Third Team All-Americans, 24 All-Northwest Conference selections, ten ABCA All-West Region selections, one Academic All-American and five Academic All-District selections, one conference batting champion, two West Region Gold Glove Award winners, two Rawlings Gold Glove National Award winner, and has had four players sign professional contracts.

In 2016 Whitworth won the regular season Northwest Conference Championship and started the season with 11 straight victories. The Pirates were ranked as high as #8 by D3baseball.com during the season. They earned their second consecutive berth in the Northwest Conference postseason tournament and played in their second consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament where they played host at Spokane's Avista Stadium. The Bucs won their opening game, defeating Case Western Reserve. The 2016 squad set school records for doubles in a season (98) and fielding percentage (.972), eclipsing their 2015 mark of .968. The Whitworth pitching staff led all of Division III baseball in walks allowed per nine innings (2.07) in 2016.

In 2015 Whitworth won the first-ever Northwest Conference post-season tournament, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. In the opener of that tournament, Dan Scheibe threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in the metal bat era at Whitworth in a 2-0 victory over nationally-ranked Linfield. The Bucs then defeated host Pacific Lutheran twice to claim the title. The 2015 squad also set a school record for team fielding percentage (.968).

The 2012 season was a milestone year for the Pirates. It marked the first Northwest Conference Championship in 21 years, the first NCAA Regional appearance in program history, the first NCAA Regional Championship in program history, Whitworth's first First Team All-American in 47 years, the first NCAA Division III World Series appearance in program history, and the first NCAA Division III World Series victory in program history.

The 2011 season marked the Pirates' first 20-win campaign in nine years and the team's first winning Northwest Conference record since 2006. Whitworth's team earned run average of 4.60 was the team's best since the Pirates moved to NCAA Division III membership in 1999.

Ramsay works as a hitting and catching instructor at numerous camps throughout the region and serves as the hitting, catching, and infield coach at Whitworth while running the offense. He has directed Nike Baseball Camps through US Sports Camps for the past seven summers. Ramsay spent the summer of 2011 abroad with United States Athletes International in Spain. The team played clubs in Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid. Ramsay also helps with summer ball placement for his current student-athletes and serves as the West Region Chair for the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee.

Ramsay was an Honorable Mention All-Northwest Conference catcher for the Pirates in 2008 and a Second Team All-NWC selection in 2007 during his two seasons playing for Whitworth. Prior to his time at Whitworth, Ramsay played 2 years of baseball at NCAA Division I Gonzaga University.

Ramsay was the head coach in Cranbrook, B.C. for the Rocky Mountain Bandits in the summer of 2008 and coached as an assistant in Trail, B.C. for the Trail Jays in the summer of 2007. He spent the summer of 2005 playing for the Kamuela Paniolos in the Hawaiian Collegiate Baseball League and the summer of 2006 playing for the Everett Merchants of the Pacific International League.

Ramsay earned his undergraduate degree from Whitworth in 2008 in Kinesiology. He earned a master’s degree from Whitworth in 2013 in Administrative Leadership. Ramsay is married to his wife Lara and they have two daughters named Prescott and McLayne.
