Nike Baseball Ethan Newton Bio

Ethan Newton joined the University of Hartford baseball coaching staff in September 2017. Newton came to Hartford from Allegany College of Maryland, where he served as the Associate Head Coach for two seasons.

In his first season with the Hawks Newton contributed to strong fielding and base running performances. The 78 stolen bases as a team last season was good for second best in program history, up from 47 the year before. Second Team All-American, Nick Campana, broke the single season stolen base record with 22. The team also recorded the second best fielding percentage in program history (.974) and has seven position players selected to All-Conference teams, including three infielders with Zach Ardito also earning NEIBA All-Region honors.

During his time at Allegany, Newton oversaw all aspects of player development, including hitting defense and base running. After his promotion to Associate Head Coach in 2017, the team saw an improvement in eight offensive categories. Newton also coached eventual NJCAA All-American, Dan Fry. Additionally, he worked with student-athletes off the field, assisting academic advisors to assure success in the classroom. During this time, he also coordinated multiple youth camps and assisted in several prospect camps at various universities.

During the summer of 2016, he served as an assistant coach for the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Baseball League. In this role, he worked with all aspects of the team. In 2015, he was in a similar role with the Madisonville Miners of the Ohio Valley Summer Collegiate League.

Prior to Allegany, he was the Varsity Assistant Coach at Norview High School from 2013-2015, while serving as the Head Coach/Hitting & Defensive Instructor at the Norfolk Baseball Academy.

As a player, Newton played two years for Allegany before transferring to Ohio University for his junior and senior years. At Allegany, he was a part of the NJCAA DII World Series team that finished sixth in the nation. He finished first in program history in career hits and second in stolen bases.

At Ohio, Newton earned second team All-MAC honors his junior year while leading the Bobcats in five offensive categories. He was named Defensive MVP during his senior campaign at both centerfield and shortstop. In only two seasons with the Bobcats, he was able to break Ohio’s career stolen base record. In the summer of 2011, he was named to the Great Lakes Summer League All-Star Team while playing for the South Ohio Copperheads.

The Norfolk, Va. native, Newton earned his associate’s degree in general studies from Allegany in 2010 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in English from Ohio in 2012. He completed his MBA in communications from Morehead Stare University in December of 2018.
