Jim Martin

Jim Martin joined the Stony Brook baseball staff in the fall of 2017 as the associate head coach.

Martin has guided seven players to First Team All-America East honors, as well as two-time, First Teamer Evan Giordano to a 2022 league Player of the Year accolade. The Seawolves had 10 all-conference selections over the last two campaigns and led the Stony Brook to a 22nd rank nationally in stolen bases.

During the shortened 2020 season, Martin helped coach the Stony Brook defense to lead the league in fielding percentage yet again, sitting at .976 at the end of the year. He also aided two prolific Seawolves hitters, Chris Hamilton (.298) and Evan Giordano (.368) to hot starts at the plate as the squad approached conference play.

During his most recent full campaign, Martin helped lead the Seawolves to the 2019 America East Regular Season and Tournament Titles, clinching the team's seventh NCAA Tournament berth in program history. Stony Brook's offense led the league in 10 offensive categories as it displayed the most prolific attack in the league during the 2019 campaign.

Martin has also helped the Seawolves develop into pros, as Stony Brook had two draftees in each of the last two seasons. Bobby Honeyman, a 2018 draftee of the Seattle Mariners, has been named a League All-Star in both of his stops in the Seattle system so far.

Another one of his mentees, Nick Grande, achieved a host of accolades in Martin's two seasons, including being a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the country's best shortstop, and being named the America East Player of the Year in the 2019 season.

Martin joined the Seawolves after spending three seasons at the University of Rhode Island, the first two as an assistant coach and the last year as the associate head coach.

While ar URI, Martin assisted in academic progress of the team and saw a cumulative GPA increase during each semester, including a Fall GPA over a 3.0 which was the highest in five years. On the field under Martin assistant, the Rams' were picked to finish last in A10 prior to the 2015 season and finished in second in the regular season and were the runner up in A10 championship. In 2016, Rhode Island claimed the both the regular season A10 championship and the A10 Conference title. URI also earned the programs' first NCAA Tournament victory with a win at South Carolina in the Columbia Regional.

Martin was also instumental in the helping the 2017 team finish second place in A10 with a 17-6 conference record after losing all 3 starting pitchers from previous year. The Rams also knocked off top 25 teams NC State and Arkansas in regular season.

Martin coached and developed New England Player of the Year Chris Hess along with Mike Corin who hit a URI recoord 19 HRs in 2017. He also helped in the development of three position players selected in MLB draft in the past two seasons (2016 Chase Livingston Kansas City Royals, 2017 Chris Hess and Martin Figueroa).

Before working with the Rams, Martin spend tthe previous four years as the head coach at Division II Merrimack. Under Martin's direction, the Warriors enjoyed a return to prominence thanks to his coaching style and ability to recruit top-notch talent in a region often dominated by perennial Division II powers such as Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire.

Martin led six of his players to Northeast-10 All-Conference honors in 2014, headlined by sophomore Frank Crinella, the NE-10 Player of the Year as well as the program's first-ever NCBWA East Region Player of the Year. Prior to that, Martin had mentored 2013 All-American Casey Cotter along with Academic All-American and 2013 MLB Draft pick Joe Mantoni.

After slowly laying the foundation for success in his first two seasons, Martin's efforts paid off in the spring of 2013 when Merrimack enjoyed one of its best seasons in program history at 30-19 overall.

Off the field, Martin made it a priority to keep active in the community as his teams were involved in wide array of activities including placing flags on graves on Veteran's Day and participating in multiple awareness/fundraising events such as the Run for Haiti 5K. For their efforts in 2013, Martin's Warriors were presented with Merrimack's community service award.

Martin also helped develop Merrimack's fundraising outreach through the creation of the program's annual golf tournament and hot stove dinners.

Prior to his time with the Warriors, Martin spent five years as an assistant at Southern Connecticut. There, he recruited back-to-back Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year award winners and helped guide the team to a 21-5 regular season record in 2010. That year, the Owls advanced to the NCAA East Region final and were ranked as high as No. 13 in the Division II national poll.

A 2005 graduate from St. John’s with a degree in education, Martin was a three-time Big East Academic All-Star for the Red Storm. He also was an All-Big East conference selection as a senior, starting in 54 games and leading his team to the regular season title as well as its second-consecutive at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
