Kellyn Tate
Kellyn Tate enters her fifth season at the helm of the Puget Sound softball program in 2017. Over the last four years she has instilled a sense of accountability and hard work in the program, seeing a dramatic improvement in the squad’s on-field play. This culminated in the Loggers ending the 2013 season with a victory at Pacific Lutheran, the Loggers’ first victory in four years over their cross-town rival.
The Loggers in 2016 took strides to progress in multiple categories. The team recorded the most wins (10) since 2011. Puget Sound was 6-0 in the team's six games in its Spring Break trip to Arizona. At the end of the season, Kayla Andrus garnered an All-NWC honor. The senior was named to the Second Team after leading the Loggers in hitting (.339), on-base percentage (.388), and slugging (.492),
In 2015, the Loggers rattled off three wins in six games during their trip to Arizona. By the end of the season, five Loggers hit multiple home runs and they had 12 as a team - the most since 2011. The youthful 2015 squad was led by Erica Gott, who was named an All-Northwest Conference Honorable mention.
Tate comes to Puget Sound with a wealth of experience and a track record for success. Her 14 years of coaching experience include stops at Portland State, Miami (Ohio), Texas Tech and Penn State. As an assistant coach, Tate has helped lead five of her teams to the NCAA Tournament and mentored several All-Region and All-America players.
Most recently, Tate helped the Portland State Vikings to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012. She served as the recruiting coordinator for the Vikings in addition to working primarily with the outfielders and hitters while in Portland.
While at Miami (Ohio), Tate also worked with the hitters and outfielders while helping the team to and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. In 2000, she also helped the Nittany Lions of Penn State to an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Tate's record of success reaches back to her days as a player at the University of Michigan. As a player, she led Michigan to four appearances in the Women's College World Series (1995-98) and three Big Ten Championships (1995-96, 98). She was a three-time All-Great Lakes Region and All-Big Ten selection.
After completing her bachelor's degree at Michigan, Tate went on to play professionally from 1998 to 2004 in the Women's Professional Softball League. She played for the Orlando Wahoos, Akron Racers and the WPF Sacramento Sunbirds.
Tate completed her Master's of Higher Education at Texas Tech where she coached from 2003-06.
