Former touring professional and NCAA Division I assistant coach Nanda Alves joined the Barry women's tennis coaching staff in the fall of 2018.

Alves got her Barry career off to a great start as she guided Verena Schmid and Zusa Maciejewska to the Division II Oracle Cup doubles title in the fall. In the spring, she helped lead Barry to its third-straight NCAA Division II national championship.

Alves, who spent the last two seasons as assistant coach at UC-Santa Barbara, helped lead the Gauchos to a 29-23 mark, including a 14-2 mark in the Big West. The Gauchos won the 2018 Big West regular season for the first time in school history.

Prior to UCSB, Alves was a volunteer assistant in 2015 at Texas A&M. The Aggies, who were ranked as high as 10th, won their regional and advanced to the NCAA Division I national tournament. The Aggies finished 17-6, including a 4-4 mark against top-10 programs.

A touring professional since 1998, Alves won 21 singles titles and 57 doubles titles during her career. She competed in multiple qualifying rounds in singles and doubles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, French Open and Australian Open. In 2005 the native of Brazil competed in the main draw at the Australian Open.

In addition to competing on the WTA Tour, Alves represented Brazil in the Federation Cup as a singles and doubles player from 2000 to 2011. She also competed in the 2003 Pan American Games as well as the German Bundesliga and Brazilian Intercity Team Annual Tournaments. She received the Brazilian Tennis Federation honor for Best Women's Player in 2004, 2005 and 2007, as well as the Heart Award during at the 2010 Federation Cup.

Alves possesses a BA in business administration from Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina Florianopolis in Brazil, which she earned in 2014.
