Matt Hoffman is the Head Volleyball Coach at San Francisco State University.

On March 29, 2016 Matt Hoffman was named the seventh head coach in SF State volleyball history. He enters his eight year as Head Coach in Fall 2023.

Hoffman led the Gators to one of their most successful seasons in school history, leading the Gators to NCAA Western Regionals for the first time since 2012. SF State posted an 18-11 record and 13-5 Conference record to finish third in the conference. The Gators beat Cal State San Marcos 3-0 in the opening round of the CCAA tournament for their second ever win at the CCAA tournament in school history. Kimberly DeBoer and Tamiya Wilson both earned AVCA All-American Honorable Mentions and AVCA West Region Honorable Mention. Five Gators earned All-Conference honors including DeBoer (CCAA First Team and Setter of the Year) Wilson (CCAA First Team) Izzy Issak (CCAA Second Team) Trinity Yates (CCAA Second Team) and Aidan Goodrich (CCAA Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention).

The Gators posted a 14-11 record and 10-8 conference record in 2022, finishing with a winning record overall and in conference for the third year in a row. They finished seventh, barely being edged out of the CCAA Tournament. Kimberly DeBoer became the program's first Setter of the Year while Tamiya Wilson became the first Freshman of the Year in the Hoffman era. Both players earned CCAA First Team honors. Alhana Velasquez and Briana DeBoer both earned CCAA Honorable Mention. Wilson was also named to the D2CCA All-West Second Team.

The 2021 season represented one of the best not only in the Hoffman era but in the history of volleyball at SF State. Hoffman guided the Gators to a 22-5 record that included a perfect 16-0 record at home. Under Hoffman's tutelage, Haynie was named the AVCA National Player of the Week for Nov. 8-14 when she landed a combined 49 kills over two games. The Gators won a CCAA tournament game for the first time in program history when they defeated Cal State San Marcos 3-1 to advance to the semifinal round. Jessica Haynie and Trinity Barr both earned CCAA All-First Team, Drew Morris was named to the CCAA All-Second Team and Izzy Issak earned CCAA Honorable Mention. Haynie also earned AVCA West Region recognition and earned Honorable Mention.

During the 2019 season, the Gators returned to the CCAA tournament and finished the season with a 16-11 record, two more wins than the season before. Drew Morris and Bailey Johnson were named to the CCAA First Team, Trinity Barr was named to the CCAA Second Team and Jessica Haynie and Payton Jensen were named CCAA Honorable Mention. Barr was also named AVCA All-West Regional Freshman of the Year and Johnson earned Honorable Mention for both AVCA All-West Region and AVCA All-American.

Under Hoffman’s tutelage in 2018, the Gators reached the postseason for the first time since 2014 and secured its first winning season since 2014. SF State started the year 6-2, including a perfect 4-0 which is the best start since 2012. The Gators had ten sweeps on the year, which is the most three-set victories since 2012. Jessica Haynie earned All-CCAA Second Team honors and Olivia Tabron took home Honorable Mention recognition.

Hoffman joined the Gators after an extremely successful three year stint as an assistant at Wichita State, his last two as the top assistant, where he helped guide the Shockers to a 77-24 mark that included two Missouri Valley Conference Championships, two MVC Tournament Championships, and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Shockers averaged 25 wins per season and boasted a 74.3 winning percentage, tops in the conference over that three year period. During that stretch, the Shockers had four AVCA All-Americans, Four AVCA All-Midwest Region honorees, 11 All-MVC honorees, and 11 Academic All-Conference honorees.

Prior to Wichita State, he served as the volunteer assistant coach at Stanford from 2010-12. He helped the Cardinal to three NCAA Tournaments, two Elite Eight appearances, and two conference championships. He also coached five All-Americans, a Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year, and 11 All Pac-12 honorees.

From 2009-13, he was the head coach for the Vision Volleyball Club in Los Gatos, California. During his time with Vision, he served as a head coach to some of the younger teams, and served as the assistant coach to the 18 Gold team that won the 18 Open Bronze medal in 2011 and 2012.

He served as camp director and owner of the Homestead Volleyball Camp from 2009-11, was a physical education teacher at Homestead High School from 2006-13, and boy's club volleyball coach for Central Coast Volleyball Club from 2005-10.

From 2007-09, he was the girl's varsity volleyball coach at Homestead High School in Cupertino, California. He led the 2008 team to the state tournament and finished runner-up, while also being Central Coast Section and NorCal champions. In 2007, the team was Central Coast Section champions and NorCal runners-up.

Hoffman was the girl's varsity volleyball coach at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California, from 2005-06 and the assistant coach for Club Yahoo 15's in San Jose in 2005. He was also the girl's varsity volleyball coach at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, California, from 2002-04.

A local product, Hoffman grew up in nearby Cupertino, here he attended Homestead High School. He lettered in basketball and volleyball. He attended San Jose State, where he was a member of the men's volleyball team. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology in 2003.

Hoffman is married to his wife, Noel. They have three children, a daughter, McKenna, and sons, Owen and Connor.
