Matt Oclander

Matt oclander bio

Oclander has been an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University since the Fall of 2019.

While at SPU, he has developed rowers from their first strokes on the water to be a part of crews that have gone to the NCAA Championships, as well as multiple conference (GNAC ) and regional (WIRA) victories.

Prior to 2019, Oclander spent two years as the men's head coach at OKC Riversport, culminating in multiple Central Regional youth championships and a silver medal at the 2018 USRowing Youth National Championships.

During the 2016-2017 season, Oclander coached for the Seattle University women’s rowing team, ending the year with a WIRA victory in the Novice 8+.

Other coaching stops have included Bothell High School, Lake Washington Rowing Club, Green Lake Crew, Resilient Rowing Club, and Northern Virginia Rowing Club. His rowing career began on the Occoquan River at West Springfield High School, and after that, he rowed and was a captain at Seattle Pacific University. A 2016 graduate of the School of Business, Government, and Economics with a degree in International Affairs, Matthew was involved with SPU’s Advisory Council, Political Union, and KSPU Radio Station.

When the megaphone isn't in-hand, Oclander is honing his craft as a boatman, repairing and maintaining shells and such of all kinds at SPU and beyond. He is a USRowing Level 3 certified coach and is the head youth coach for the Renton Rowing Center.
