Former Minnesota student-athlete Matt Rachey returned to the Gophers men's golf program as assistant coach on August 12, 2019.

“There’s no doubt that what he shares, and the passion he has for this program, is unprecedented,” head coach Justin Smith said. “We want to make sure these student-athletes have the best experience in college golf. Playing in competition, our performance on the course and academics all play a huge part in that experience, and Matt’s done all that.

He is going to be very instrumental in helping to build team development and player development and allow us to achieve our goals on and off the course.”

Most recently, Rachey served as an assistant golf professional at the Minnesota Valley Golf Club in Bloomington, Minn., after holding the same position at the Minneapolis Golf Club. In addition, he ran his own business providing golf instruction for students from Waconia, Minn., and the surrounding area.

Rachey has also worked as an assistant golf professional at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and he was an associate teaching professional at Island View Golf Club in Waconia.

A four-year letterwinner, Rachey played at Minnesota from 2013-17. He was a three-time All-Big Ten Academic honoree and twice was named the program’s “Louis Lick” Hardest Worker Award Winner.

Rachey appeared in five tournaments as a freshman for a team that would go on to win the Big Ten championship. His best finish came when he tied for sixth at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate. The next year, he played in a career-high six tournaments for the Gophers.

In his junior season, Rachey had a career-best finish when he claimed second at the St. John’s Invitational. He posted three consecutive rounds under par, including a career-low 68, to finish at 6-under-par with a 208.

Overall, he played in 16 tournaments during his career, including two during his senior campaign. He finished with a career scoring average of 75.73 with three rounds under par and two top-10 finishes.

A native of Waconia, Rachey graduated in 2017 from Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management with a double-major in management information systems and finance.
