Former University of Minnesota women’s golfer Michele (Edlin) Rutt was named assistant coach at her alma mater, head coach Michele Redman announced on February 1, 2018.

“We are thrilled to welcome Michele back to the Gophers,” Redman said. “Her experience as both a student-athlete and a head coach, along with her familiarity and passion for our program, will be tremendously valuable to our team.”

Rutt’s coaching experience came as the head coach of St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul. She mentored the Wildcats for one season, where she was responsible for nearly all aspects of the program including academic and operational oversight.

“I am very excited to be back on campus and for the opportunity that Michele and the University of Minnesota has given me,” Rutt said. “I can’t wait to get to know the team, start the spring season off strong, and move forward with the next steps and see where we can go together.”

Most recently, Rutt served as the Director of Partner and Sponsor Development for the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Her responsibilities included recruiting new business partners, event planning and management, particularly with athletic-related events, promotions and soliciting fundraising and partnerships.

Rutt has experience in college athletics beyond the golf course as well. She served as an academic mentor at the University of Oklahoma, assisting in the academic progress of the women’s basketball and gymnastics teams among other roles.

A 2011 graduate of the Carlson School of Management, Rutt was extremely successful on the course for the Gophers. She was an Academic All-Big Ten and National Golf Coaches' Association (NGCA) Academic All-American honoree who currently holds the 16th-best career scoring average in program history (78.72). Edlin was a member of the 2011 squad which advanced to the NCAA Championships for just the second time in program history, where they finished 19th.

Rutt, who additionally earned a master’s degree in intercollegiate athletics administration at Oklahoma, is married to Travis Rutt. The couple has one daughter, Amilia.
