Men’s Associate Head Golf Coach, Grand Canyon University

Mike Schaloum - Men’s Associate Head Golf Coach, Grand Canyon University

Mike Schaloum is the men’s associate head golf coach at Grand Canyon University and serves as a support staff member for Next Athletes and Nike Golf Camps.

Michael Schaloum enters his fourth year with the GCU men’s golf program and his first as Associate Head Coach.

Schaloum was elevated to associate head coach in July of 2024 after serving as assistant coach for three seasons beginning in 2021-22.

In Schaloum's third season with GCU, he helped guide the Lopes to their second straight WAC Championship title. GCU took home three team titles in 2023-24, including the WAC title at Chaparral Pines in Payson, Ariz., to advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second consecutive season. Two Lopes took home individual trophies that season, including Nicky Kling in the Wildcat Invitational and Tommaso Zorzetto in the GCU Invitational.

Schaloum worked closely with freshman Gavin O'Neill, who finished among the best for his class in the 2023-24 campaign. Schaloum also helped guide Kling, Zorzetto, and Matthew Pennington to All-WAC honors, including Kling's WAC Golfer of the Year award, the second Lope to win (third time) since joining the WAC in 2013-14.

In his second year on staff during the 2022-23 season, Schaloum helped guide the Lopes to the first WAC Tournament Championship in program history as well as the first team NCAA Regional Tournament appearance. The Lopes tied a 54-hole WAC Tournament record for lowest team score at 34 under par, winning by five strokes at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

Schaloum coached three All-WAC recipients in 2022-23 and has coached eight during his time at GCU. Schaloum worked with players including Zorzetto and Sam Murphy into prominent roles in the starting five of each tournament, including Murphy, who was the Lopes' number one seeded player heading into the final days of both the WAC Championship and NCAA Tournament Regional as a sophomore.

With Schaloum on staff, the Lopes have finished in the top-three in each WAC Championship since the 2020-21 season with two titles, a second place showing that season and a third place finish in 2021-22.

Schaloum played for the Lopes as a student - graduating in 2018 with a degree in Finance and Economics - while serving as co-captain of the team. Prior to his career at GCU, he played at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California where he led the Pacific Athletic Conference for two seasons, winning four tournaments in the process under the legendary coach Tony Manzoni. Schaloum graduated from O’Dea High School as a 4-year letterman in both golf and tennis, playing for Brian Vaughan.

Following college, Schaloum worked as an equities analyst for one of the largest wealth management firms in the Pacific Northwest, Evergreen Gavekal. He then moved back to Phoenix and spent the past year coaching players of all skill levels, from beginners to mini-tour pro’s. Aside from his playing career, his ‘on-the-course’ experience includes caddying for winners on both the PGA Tour and European Tour - Cameron Davis and Min Woo Lee – and in a major championship (2016 KPMG LPGA Championship).

Michael also spends his time volunteering, serving on the board of Fir State Golf Club - one of the oldest historically black golf clubs in the country - as investment coordinator and tournament chairman.
